Soon you didn't know whom you could
trust. You might rush in to see a
friend and blurt out your indignation,
only to discover by his raised eyebrows
and strange silence that he didn't share
your opinion. That was bad, because at
the same time he might feel it his duty
to inform the authorities about your “lack
of understanding.”

間もなく私たちは誰を信じていいのかがわから
なくなったのです．友人宅に駆け込み、会って、
統制への不満を言おうものなら、友人は眉をつ
り上げて驚き、妙な沈黙が生まれるのです．そ
の沈黙は「あなたとの意見は共有できかねます」
と言っているのだ．そうなるとまずいことにな
ります．なぜなら、同時にその人は「こんな物
分かりのないやつら」を当局に通報することが
自分の義務だと感じ出すかも知れないからなの
です．
