Time and again I had been warned by
the Mistress of Novices that I could not
race over the staircase like that, taking
two and three steps at a time ; that I
definitely could not slide down the
banister ; that whistling, even the whistling
of sacred tunes, had never been heard in
these venerable rooms before ; that jump-
ing over the chimneys on the flat roof
of the school wing was not fitting for
an aspirant to the novitiate of the holy
Order of Saint Benedict. I agreed whole-
heartedly each time, but the trouble was,
there were so many trespasses occurring
every day.

再三再四、私は、教育長から、注意を受けて
いました．階段をそんなスピードで、走って
はいけませんとか、二段、三段と、一度に、
跳ねて、登り降りしないこととか、手すりを
滑り降りるのは、絶対にだめだとか、この
厳かな修道院では、（どこの部屋であっても）
口笛を吹くなんて、前代未聞、（だめです．）
それが、聖歌であっても．校舎の平屋根の煙
突から、飛び降りるだなんて、聖ベネディク
ト修道会の準尼僧候補生のすることではない、
などなど．
私は、注意されるたび、つくづく、そうだと
思った．でも、難儀なことに、来る日も来る
日も、規則違反を犯してばかりでした．
