The Arcade of the Pont Neuf is not a place
for a stroll．You take it to make a short cut,
to gain a few minutes． It is traversed by busy
people whose sole aim is to go quick and
straight before them．You see apprentices there in
their working-aprons, work-girls taking home their
work, persons of both sexes with parcels under
their arms．

ポン・ヌフのアーケード街は散歩をするような場所では
ない．寸分惜しんで通るための近道なのだ．急ぎの用向き
の者がその目的のためにわき目もふらず、通り過ぎる場所
である．そこには作業エプロン姿の丁稚や女子の奉公人が
仕事を持ち帰る姿があった．男女みなそれぞれに、包みを
小脇にかかえていた．

イメージが生じるのでpersons of both sexesとしている
のだと思います．小さな子らも働いていた時代です．
要は作者はmen,.women, boys, and girls であることを
言いたかったはずなのだから．
