On the third day after my arrival the Baron left for
a hunting trip in Hungary. The same evening Baroness
Matilda said to me during supper：
“ When all the children are in bed, wouldn't you like
to come over to my room ? ”
I accepted gladly, and started immediately to list in my mind
the most important questions about the children, the house,
and last, but not least, he Captain himself.

私が来てから３日目、男爵大佐は狩猟の旅行にハンガリーへ
出かけました。 同じ日の夕方、マチルダ男爵夫人が、夕食
中に私に言いました。
「子供たちは、みんな何時に寝るんですか？
私の部屋に、いらっしゃらない？」
私はお誘いを喜んでお受けしました。そして直ちに子供たちの
ことや、家のこと、聞いておきたいこと、そしてもちろん大佐
のことも、すべて頭の中で、リストアップしました。
