When the Spaniards came they had to give everything
they saw a name. This is the first duty of any explorer——a
duty and a privilege. You must name a thing before you
can note it on your hand-drawn map. Of course they were
relogious people, and the men who could read and write,
who kept the records and drew the maps, were the
tough untiring priests who traveled with the soldiers.
Thus the first names of places were saints' names or
religious holidays celebrated at stopping places.

に名前を付けていきました．これはいかなる開拓者にも
課せられた最初になすべき義務だったわけです——義
務と特権でもありました．手書きの地図に記すにも、ま

牧師たちで、彼らが記録保存や地図の作成を行っていま
した．そして牧師たちは兵士同行で、各地を回りました．
こういうわけで、初めに付けられた地名は、彼らの立ち
寄り地で営まれた宗教活動から聖人の名や宗教休日の名
がつけられたのでした．
