My father, who was very ancient, had
given me a competent share of learning,
as far as house-education, and a country
free-school generally goes, and design'd
me for the law；but I would be satisfied
with nothing but going to sea, and my
inclination to this led me to strongly
against the will, nay the commands
of my father, and against all the entreaties
and perswasions of my mother and other
friends, that there seem'd to be something
fatal in that propension of Nature tending
directly to the life of misery which was
to befal me.
父はとても古風な人でしたが、私には、
家庭教育に於いて、また国の学費無料の
教育一般にに関する限りで、そこそこの
学問を私に与えて、法律家にしようと企
てたのでした．だけど私はただ船乗りに
なることで満足でした．
そして海への心の傾倒はあまりにも
強く父の希望に背くように私を動かし
たため、またそれのみならず、父の命令にも
背き、母や友人たちの願いにも説得にも
応じなかったほど強固な私の意思には、
そして、私の人生をのちにまともに降り
かかる不幸に陥れたこの生来の性向には
なんだか運命を感じるに至ったのでした．
