I could hardly believe my ears.
We candidates saw Reverend Mother
Abbess only from afar in choir.
We were the lowest of the low, living

wearing our black mantillas,
waiting with eager anticipation for
our reception into the novitate.

私は耳を疑いました。私たち修習生が修道先生に
会えるのは、聖歌隊で歌っているとき、遠くで見
るだけですから.
修習生の序列は修道女候補生の中でも一番下だっ
たのです。黒のマンティーラをかぶってはいるが、
候補生に迎え入れられるのを、今か今かと待つ身
分でした。

can hardly + 動詞 ＝ ほとんど～できない
動詞は believe で can が過去ですから、「ほとんど信じられなかった」
何を？ ear 耳を。
私は、my ear 自分の耳をほとんど信じられなかった、つまり
私は自分の耳を疑った。
anticipation は 期待して待つこと。eagar は 熱望しながら、ということで
eagar anticipation 期待熱望しながら待つ、ということです。
