The first one that I met was O-san, the servant-woman, one of a
species yet more savage than the shosei.
初めに出会ったのは、下女のおさん。これがまたひどい
やつで、書生なんかより野蛮だ。

No sooner had she seen me than she grabbed me
by the scruff of the neck and flung me out of the house.
おさんは、ボクを見るなり、いきなり首根っこを摑まえて
放り出してしまいやがった。

Accepting that I had no hope, I lay stone-still,
my eyes tight shut and trusting to Providence.
希望は持てないことを認めて、ボクは横たわった。
目をしっかり閉じて、天に運命をゆだねる。

But the hunger and the cold were more than I could bear.
はずだったが、腹は減るし、寒いし、もう限界だった。

Seizing a moment when O-san had relaxed her watch,
I crawled up once again to flop into the kitchen.
おさんが油断している隙に、ボクはまた這い上がって、
ドサっと台所へ入り込んだ。

I was soon flung out again.
ボクはまた投げ出された。

I crawled up yet again, only yet again to be flung out.
また這い上がったが、また放り出される。

I remember that the process was several times repeated.
このプロセスは数回に及んだと記憶している。

Ever since that time, I have been utterly disgusted
with this O-san person.
その時以来、ボクはこのおさんという人間には、
とことん、胸くそ悪さを感じている。

The other day I managed at long last to rid myself of my
sense of grievance, for I squared accounts
by stealing her dinner of mackerel-pike.
先日、ようやくボクは長きにわたる恨みを晴らす
ことができた。おさんの夕食のサンマを黙って頂戴
してやったのさ。これで貸し借りなしだ。
