Our little tent city was erected on the east side
of the island, where it slopes gently down to the
water, but every day we went up to the cliffs,
watching the surf or the big ships out at sea,
heading for the Mediterranean, or watching Signor
Pauletta fishing. We slept in naval hammocks under
the pine trees, and after the couple of unquiet
nights, when you had to pick yourself up from
under your hammock several times, it became a
most restful way of sleeping. The strong scent of
the pines, the quiet murmur of the waves, the
moonlight coming down through the branches,
the gentle swinging of the hammocks——oh, it was
heavenly !

私たちのテント村は島の東側に設置されました．
そこはゆるやかな坂になっており浜辺まで続いて
いたのですが、毎朝私たちは反対の崖の方に登っ
ていきました．そこでサーフィンをする人や、海
の彼方の大きな船が地中海を目指して出て行くの
を見たりしていました．あるいはまたシニョール・
ポーレッタが釣りをしているのを眺めたりしまし
た．私たちは松の木の下で、海軍の軍用ハンモッ
クで寝たりしました．2～3日ハンモックから落っ
こちること数回、なれない夜を過ごしてからは、
やっぱりハンモックが睡眠には一番の安らぎを得る
方法になりました．松の強烈な匂い、打ち寄せる
波のざわめく音、木の枝から注ぐ月光、ハンモッ
クの揺れるやさしい音——ああ、天国でした！

tent city：作者の造語；テント・シティですが、私たち
の馴染みの言葉に置き換えると「テント村」．
surf：波乗り
unquiet：(形) そわそわした、落ち着かない
restful：(形) 休息を与える、安らぎを与える
*tent city についていた形容詞 little を訳し忘れていましたが、
これは訳すとテントが小さいのかと誤解を招くのでそのまま
にしておきます．

ポーレット氏、ポーレッタ氏、いろいろ悩みましたが、
今回からそのままシニョール・ポーレッタとします．
もっと忠実にスィニョール・パウレッタでもいいの
ですが、イタリア語講座でもないので、一般に馴染む
表記にします．
