They had a tool or a weapon that is also nearly gone,
or perhaps it is only dormant for a while. It is argued
that because they believed thotoughly in a just, moral
God they could put their faith there and let the smaller
securities take care of themselves. But I think that
because they trusted themselves and respected themselves
as individuals, because they knew beyond doubt that they
were valuable and potentially moral units——because
of this they could give God their own courage and dignity
and then receive it back.

彼らには道具があった．あるいは武器と言ってもよかった．
それはもうほとんど姿を消したか、あるいは一時的に冬眠
してるだけなのかもしれない．彼らは正義と道徳の神を強く
信じており、信仰はそこに置いているので、それよりも
小さな安全防御の神たちが彼らの面倒をみているという
ふうに取りざたされている．しかし私にいわせれば、彼ら
は個人として、自分たち自身を信頼し、自分たち自身に敬
意を払っているためである．彼らが価値があり、潜在的に
道徳のある集団である——この理由で彼らは神に彼ら自身
の勇気と尊厳を与え、見返りに安心保護を受け取るのであ
る．
