Soon afterward the Captain left on a long journey which
would keep him away until the autumn. He explained to me
that he had to do this ; otherwise, people would talk.
" Talk ? About what ? " I said.
" Well, about us. "
" But why don't they talk now ? " I wanted to know.

And he was right. Through the summer months the children
and I grew closer together every day. And the figure of their
father grew more and more distinctly into my life every
letter I received from him. It was a happy and peaceful time.
