英文の読み方の基本である「フレーズ・リーディング」（英語の語順のまま、意味のまとまりごとにスラッシュを入れて読み下す方法で、スラッシュ・リーディングとも言う）を行ってみる。私の好きな英文のエッセー「星の王子さま」を使うことにする。
The Little Prince
Have you ever read ／The Little Prince ? It is ／one of my favorite books.
At first,／it may seem ／like a fairly tale, ／but beneath the simple words, ／there is great wisdom. As the little prince travels ／to different planets, ／he learns ／about life. If you reflect carefully ／on his experiences, ／you too can share the lessons ／that he learns.
The little prince fell in love ／with a beautiful, fragrant rose ／that grew in the tiny planet ／where he lived. Although this flower was vain and flirtatious, ／he could not resist ／her charm and her beauty. Every morning ／he watered his lovely rose. Every evening ／he protected her ／from the cold night air.
But ／the flower's foolish words ／made the little prince ／doubt her love for him.
If he had judged his rose ／by her deeds ／rather than her words, ／he would have realized instead ／that she loved him very much.
During his travels, ／the little prince met people ／who did not appreciate the beauty of life. He wondered ／why the businessman devoted all his energies ／to accumulating wealth. The man explained ／that these material possessions ／were "matters of consequence." The little prince knew ／that they did not make the businessman happy. Like many people, ／this man was materially rich ／but spiritually poor. He was so busy ／counting his money ／that he forgot the precious treasures ／hidden inside his heart.
The little prince talked to people ／who did not want to waste time ／on invisible things ／such as beauty, ／friendship, ／love, ／or wisdom. They wanted ／fast, ready-made substitutes. They bought expensive things, ／and thought ／that they had found beauty. They surrounded themselves ／with admirers, ／and believed that they had friends. They talked ／about their love for others, ／but thought only about themselves. They boasted ／about their wisdom, ／but acted like fools.
They valued only ／what they could see. Sadly, ／they did not know ／that the most beautiful things in life ／are‘invisible’.

旅をしている間に、／王子さまは人たちに出会いました／人生の素晴らしさを知らない。王子さまは思ったのです／どうしてビジネスマンが夢中なのかと／富を蓄えることに。その男は説明しました／物質的に豊かなことが／大切なものだと。王子さまは知りました／そのビジネスマンが幸せではないことを。多くの人たちと同じように／この人は物質的に豊かではあるが／精神的に不幸であった。彼は忙しくて／お金を数えるのに／大切な宝物を忘れてしまったのです／心の中に隠されている。
