例えば、His words made her angry. この文を直訳して、「彼の言葉は彼女を怒らせた」でも、この場合はわかるが、普通は不自然な日本語になる。同じ動詞を使った次の表現はどうだろうか。What made you do such a thing ?
S： 「何があなたにそんなことをさせたのか」が直訳ですね。特殊な言い方ですね。
T： そのとおりだ。「あなたはなぜそんなことをしたのか」が日本語の表現で、人を主語にしている。
S： Why did you do such a thing ? と違いはありますか。
T： 意味内容の違いはない。両方とも自然な英語の表現だ。
S： そのまま理解することが大切ですね。
