A Christmas present
One winter, there was a very big flood in a town. A lot of houses were washed away. Jane’s house was all right, because it was on the side of a hill.
Her house was very small and she had five children, but Jane took in one of the families who were now homeless from the flood. From that day on she lived together with the family in her small house till they were able to build their own house again.
Jane’s friend Helen was very surprised at this and said to her, “Why do you want to give yourself so much more work when you already have so many children?” Jane thought for a minute and began to tell her story :
When I was a little girl, there was a woman in my town. Her name was Mrs. Scott. She was very poor, because her husband had died and she had a lot of children.
On the day before Christmas, this woman said to her children, “We won’t be able to have much for Christmas this year, so I’m going to buy one present for all of us. I’ll go and get it now.”
A little later, she came back with a little girl who was much poorer than they were. The girl had no mother or father. “Here is our present,” she said to her children. they were very happy with such a present. That little girl grew up as their sister.
I was that Christmas present.
