Giugliano confirmed to miss WSBK opener with injury
http://www.crash.net/wsbk/news/214712/1/giugliano-confirmed-to-miss-wsbk-opener-with-injury.html
Davide Giugliano will miss the season opener of the new World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island after crashing during testing, his Aruba.it Ducati team has confirmed via Twitter.

The Italian, who had been a strong pace setter on the Panigale R during the final test before this weekend's first race of the season in Australia, suffered a hard fall at turn 11 and was taken to hospital for checks.

A CAT scan revealed fractures to the L1 and L2 vertebrae in the lumbar region of his back. Although the injury isn't consider too serious the team and Giugliano have come to the decision he will not be fit enough to race.

“I'm very upset about the crash because things had been going very well,” Giugliano said. “I had good feeling with the bike by the end of session one and I was able to lap with consistently fast times.

The team is yet to confirm whether they will run a replacement rider for Giugliano, but at such short notice it seems unlikely.

WSBK Phillip Island: Bayliss escapes unhurt after huge high-side
http://www.crash.net/wsbk/news/214853/1/bayliss-escapes-unhurt-after-huge-highside.html
Troy Bayliss escaped injury after a heavy high-side in FP4 as the World Superbike legend qualified in 14th place on his return to the series at Phillip Island.

Bayliss, who is standing in for the injured Davide Giugliano in the Aruba.it Ducati team, set a fastest lap of 1m 32.201s after failing to progress to Superpole 2 and was reasonably satisfied with his progress.

“Today was certainly an improvement over yesterday. I've had time to get some good laps in and felt a lot better on the bike,” he said.

“I did have a crash in the free practice, it was a big high-side but I landed ok and was fortunately unhurt.

“I was a little disappointed to not have the chance to participate in the shoot-out but I'm still happy because I haven't used the qualifying tyre for such a long time, and you need time to build confidence with those tyres,” Bayliss added.

“I'm confident that we'll be able to make further improvement tomorrow. The high temperatures forecast for tomorrow will definitely be a factor but it's the same for everyone so we'll just have to see what we can do.”
