題名の『ブラック・レイン（Black Rain）』とは、原爆投下や空襲によって起こる煤混じりの雨を指している（作中、菅井が大阪空襲後の黒い雨に纏わる因縁をニックに語る）。菅井はアメリカが戦後日本人にもたらした個人主義が、義理人情の価値観を喪失した佐藤のようなアウトローを産んだと暗にアメリカ人を批判し、「黒い雨」という言葉を象徴的に用いる。同年公開の邦画『黒い雨』の様に戦争をストーリーの中心に据えた映画ではない。
劇場映画作品としては松田優作の遺作となった。
