【 電子制御4WDを採用した異色のレーシングポルシェ 】
1986年のル・マン24時間レースにポルシェが実験的にエントリーしたのがポルシェ961です。4WDスーパースポーツ、959をベースにレース仕様に仕上げられた961は、グループCカーのポルシェ962Cと同じ排気量2847cc水平対向6気筒DOHC4バルブツインターボエンジンを搭載。680馬力のビッグパワーは959譲りのコンピューター制御によるフルタイム4WDシステムにより前後輪に最適に配分されるのです。レースにはこの年のパリダカールラリーで959を優勝に導いたドライバーのルネ・メッジュがクロード・バロー･レナとコンビを組んで出走。予選順位こそ26位にとどまったものの、決勝レースでは徐々に順位を上げ、純レーシングカーのグループＣカーに割って入り総合7位でゴール。しかもユノデエールのストレートでは時速330キロの最高速を記録して、サーキットの注目を集めたのです。
