GENETO Days by Yiota Toumba
I arrived in Kyoto early March 2012, and as this was my first trip to anywhere in Asia I was a little scared of the unknown, but having arrived on my first day at Geneto, all my fears suddenly disappeared. I was introduced to Geneto through a previous intern of theirs who I had studied with at Westminster University, and having seen snippets of what Yoshi had been involved in, I was excited to get stuck in.
Firstly I was involved in a project in the area of Miyagawa-cho working on a design mainly for the community. This project was strictly traditional as the area was one of the main geisha communities in Kyoto. So I was able to help with surveys for the surrounding sites and was asked to make a few models for their design presentation.
Soon after I was asked to get involved in the Morita-house project. The client wanted a smaller traditional Japanese house built in place of their current house. So with this in mind, there were certain elements that they wanted to keep, such as the entrance gate and the two original traditional Japanese gardens. So I was asked to take measurements for these existing parts and create scaled drawings.
Following a meeting with the client, Geneto was asked to come up with three proposals for this new build, and the three concepts were very different. This site was on a major slope and there were many limitations with building heights and roof slopes, so with this in mind it was important to prioritise on using the space as effectively as possible within the house itself. Our main concept was bridging the gap between inside and outside.
The next project that I was heavily involved in was the Hattori project where I was given free reign to use Obi texiles and different fabric patterns to come up with designs which could be used for the design of a sofa. Geneto was given around 30 very different fabric samples of which I was able to play with as I wished.

Another project that I was doing a lot of modeling for was Project Kaz. Around the outskirts of Tokyo is an area called Gumma which was slightly rural and nowhere near the city. The client wanted to create an Italian restaurant which would become iconic for the area and would also bring the community together. So the theme that Geneto came up with was a circus theme, meaning the shape of the circus tent and curtains became important, and such other iconic elements of a circus including colours or certain shapes added to the original ‘iconic’ concept. So many models were made at different scales and using different materials. We were able to visit the site itself at one point because we had to take many measurements of the site and meet with the client. Was interesting to finally put a face to the project.
After having worked on project Kaz there was an opportunity for us to work with the brand Diesel. The brief was to create an instillation situation for their range of furniture and furnishings in the flagship store in Tokyo, shibuya. I worked with modeling the site itself, which was the lower ground floor in the shop, and modeling the furniture to scale to give us more of a realistic view of the site.

群馬県の須永邸で頂いたイタリアン by 山中コ〜ジ
久しくお料理についてのブログは書いていません。
昨年までは、このブログでも色々なお店へ行き、いただいたお料理について書きましたが、書けば書く程、僕は毎晩遊びに行っているだとか、お金を散財しているという悪い噂しか立たないので今年は自粛する事にしました。
お店に行く事は、通常の人より多いかもしれませんが、99％がプライベートではなく仕事の一環として行っていると言う事は、僕の名誉の為にも敢えて記録しておきます。
そんな中、久しぶりに料理ネタを書く事にします。
それは群馬へ出張した際、クライアントである須永邸にて頂いたお料理についてです。
クライアントはイタリアン シェフなので、この日は僕の好きそうなイタリアンフードを沢山作ってくれました。
同行したメンバーは出される豪華なお料理に舌鼓を打ちます。
特に最年少のAndersは嬉しそう。
出されるお料理全てが美味しい。
この味ならお客は着くはず。
そう感じながらいただきます。
思い返すと、8月のとある一週間は須永氏がGENETO京都事務所に宿泊しながら毎晩京都のレストランを二人で巡りました。
イタリアンを中心に巡った訳ですが、各店のシェフとも沢山話す機会ともなり、それぞれがフィロソフィを持ってレストランを経営しているのだと随分感心しました。
つまり、シェフの思いがどれだけ詰まっているかによって味にまで反映されている。
そういう印象を強く持ちました。
そんな滞在とレストラン巡りで、僕の好物が分かったらしいクライアント。
これでもかというくらいに、好物のオンパレードです。
幸福な一時です。
滞在中のミスターと白さんは、毎晩美味しいお料理を食べている様で羨ましい。

とても美味しい。
海外へ出張に行けば、必ず買い込んでクライアントのお店へ持ち込んで作ってもらいたい。
そう言う意味でも料理店を設計する事は、後の楽しみもあるんだと実感しました。
自分の設計した空間に、みんなで集まって料理を味わう。
これは最高に幸せな事です。

ちなみに、ミスターと白さんは毎日宿泊している訳ですが、宿泊させてくださる須永氏ご夫婦の覚悟と言いますか、お店に掛ける情熱は尋常じゃなく、本当に素晴らしいと感動しました。
ほとんどの人が、公私混同を避けたがる。
でも、須永氏はともかくとして、奥様は現在妊娠中で他人を家に住まわせるには相当の覚悟が要ったはず。
それでも二人の夢を実現するため、色々な犠牲も我慢しているのだと感じました。
自営業で事業を一から興すという事は、生易しい事なんか無いんですから。
個人的にも以前のGENETO京都事務所では、皆で生活を4年間していました。
勿論、公私の境は僕も妻もミスターも白さんも無かった。
それでも、みんなで辛い事も楽しい事も共有できた日々で下した。
これは口で言う程簡単な事ではありませんが、結果的にはGENETOの成長を皆で経験して来たという思いはそれぞれに育まれたと思います。
それが、現在のGENETOの絆であると僕自身は自負しています。
そんな思い出がこみ上げた須永邸の夜でもありました。
ここまでお店に掛ける思いがあれば、きっと、これから直面する様々な試練にも打ち勝てるんじゃないかと、素直に彼らの思いや夢に共感できる夜でした。

施工が続く群馬県の現場へ by 山中コ〜ジ
pivotoの二人が施工をおこなっている群馬の現場へ行きました。
彼らが京都を離れて、そろそろ一月になります。
今回のプロジェクトはpivotoにとって史上最も難易度が高く、スケールが大きいという大変な仕事です。
僕が群馬の現場へ行くのは地鎮祭以来ですが、地域サーベイへ行ったときと合わせると今回で3度目です。
現場では２つ目のフレームが取り付けられようという最中でした。
一つ一つが非常に大きく、一人で作る制作限界を大幅に超えたフレームは、まさに家具のスケールからは逸脱した建築に近いスケールであると思います。
フレーム作業と同時に、検討作業が進められているのは、多角形の屋根パーツです。
柱梁の構造となるフレームと、それを覆う表皮の様な面材を組み合わせる事で一つの構造体として成立する為、化粧として多角形の面を作る事とは意味が違います。
その為、フレームと面の接点、面と面の接点は高いクオリティで接していないと成り立ちません。
この作業は想定していた事ですが非常に難易度が高く、pivotoの二人を苦しめています。
今回は僕の他にも、山下麻子や写真家の近藤泰岳氏、インタ－ンで来ているAndersという４名が現場に行きました。
群馬に到着するなり作業を手伝うこととなり、如何に現場が戦場であるかがよく分かります。
現場を所狭しと動き回る黄色いヘルメットが、過酷な現場イメージをコミカルに演出してくれています。
壁面とフレームのディテール
正対して撮影しているのでフレームの断面形状は分かりにくいですが、１２mm合板の断面はそれぞれ微妙な角度で切断されており、上から貼られる面との隙間ができないディテールとなっています。
この技術はやはり彼らが家具職人である為、高い精度で作れるのだと感じました。
今回のプロジェクトを実行しようと言う決意に我々が行き着いた理由の一つは、彼らの技術とモチベーションに裏付けられているんだとも感じました。
大きなフレームを支えるAndersは、常に力持ちぶりを発揮してくれました。
また、写真家であるにも関わらず、pivotoの現場作業を手伝ってくれる近藤氏には感謝です。
特に近藤氏は現場の様子を撮影しながら、施工も手伝うという働きぶりはまさにGENETOに同行する戦場カメラマンです。
我々は２日間、群馬に滞在しました。
帰り際に皆で記念撮影し、現場を後にしました。
pivotoの群馬での作業は10月中旬くらいまでかかりそうです。
現場作業をおこなっているクライアントの須永一久氏と奥様、pivotoのミスター／白栄一郎とオープンデスクで手伝ってくれている伊藤惇君／吉澤健太君には是非とも安全に気をつけながら頑張って頂きたいです。
