徳川の時代が終わり、明治の世になってすぐのことのようです。 ある旧親藩の元剣術指南役の侍が、武士の威厳を見せるために、多くの大衆を集め、城の中庭で剣術の技と試し切りを披露しました。 その侍は、大きな声を出し、濡れた稲わらの束を一刀のもと切って行きました。 そこに集まっていた大衆は、大いに感心したようです。
それを見ていた一人の老婆が、その侍に”その刀を貸しておくれ、わしが切ってみる”、と言ったそうです。その老婆は曲がった腰の上に左手拳を乗せ、右手に刀を握り、あっという間に残りの稲わらの束をすべて切ってしまったようです。 その老婆は、”鎌で草を刈るようなもんじゃ”といったようです。 大衆にどよめきが起こり、その侍は２度と試し切りを披露することはなかったようです。
香取神道流には、濡れた稲わらの束でなく乾いた麦わらの束を切ることの難しさを教えております。究極は天井からつるした乾いた麦わらの束を切ることのようです。 乾いた麦わらの束を切るこつを教えていただきましたが、凡人の私には未だ出来ません。 ましてや、天井からつるした乾いた麦わらの束を切ることなど想像も出来ません。 日本広しといえども、香取神道流師範大竹先生以外に出来る者が多くいるとは思えません。
大竹先生には伝説があります。 恩師林弥左衛門先生に学んでいる若かりし頃のことのようです。 弥左衛門先生の稽古から帰る夜道に、刀の切れを試し一本の竹を切ったようです。 そして、 もう一本、もう一本と、気が付いたら夜が明け、竹林の竹が一本もなくなっていたようです。 このような伝説が残るほど、実践的に刀の切れを追求された方です。
It happened at Meiji era right after Tokugawa Shogunate was over. A former sword master of a landlord, who was close to Tokugawa Shogunate, demonstrated a sword technique and cutting, while inviting a lot of regular people in a middle garden of the castle. The former master cut bunches of wetty rice straws with big voice. A lot of regular people were very much impressed with it.
An elderly woman, who could not stand straight because of the age, asked the former master to let her try it with the sword. The woman cut it so quickly with the sword. She said it was like cutting weeds with a sickle. A lot of regular people who saw it were very much upset. The former master never tried the demonstration again.
We were taught how difficult to cut bunches of dry wheat straws, not wetty rice straws. The most difficult one is to cut bunches of dry wheat straws hanging from ceiling. I was taught how to cut it, but it is still a challenge for me. I can not imagine how difficult to cut bunches of dry wheat straws hanging from ceiling. I believe there is a few people including Otake-Sensei all over Japan, who can do it.
There is a legend of Otake-Sensei. It is around 70 years ago when young Otake-sensei was learning Katori Shintoryu from Mr Yazaemon Hayashi. Otake-Sensei cut a bamboo when he was on the way to his home from a Dojo of Yazaemon-Sensei. He cut a bamboo, and another one. Eventually it dawned and he noticed there was no bamboo in the mountain. Otake-Sensei is a person who explored very practically how to cut with a sword so deeply.
