香取神道流師範大竹利典先生に入門し教えを請うようになった時、剣術と同時に刀の事をよく教えていただきました。 当時の大竹先生の愛刀は、備前長船恒弘でした。 長さは常寸、反りは８分前後、細身で棒樋があり、大変美しい姿の名刀でした。 日本武道館が監修した"香取神道流剣術"の居合の演武で大竹先生が使用している刀です。 Youtubeで、大竹先生の居合の演武を通して見ることが出来ます。 本当に美しい名刀です。
大竹先生は、その名刀の切先を道場の床につけて、刀身の真ん中当たりを手のひらで強く押しました。 名刀は弓のように湾曲を描き、すぐに元に戻りました。 そして、”よい刀は折れず、曲がらず、よく切れる” とおっしゃいました。 また、刀は刃で打つと強いが棟で打つと弱く折れやすいと教えてくれました。 大竹先生は、あらゆる角度から刀を研究して、刀を知りつくしておりました。
日本刀は、神聖なものであり、日本男児の命であると思っていた自分には、大竹先生のその行動が衝撃的でした。 刀は道具であり、道具である以上は良いところ、悪いところ、強いところ、弱いところを徹底的に熟知しなければならないという合理的、現実的な考え方です。
大竹先生は、厳格な武道の世界で大変厳しい師でありますが、、権威に胡坐をかき威厳を保つようなことをせず、厳格なしきたりについても本質を追及することを忘れない立派な方です。 そのためか、とてもユーモアのある方です。 岩のような厳格な方でなく、柳のように柔軟な方です。
神聖な名刀である備前長船恒弘は、大竹先生が持つと威厳を放ち、生き生きとします。 名刀は神聖な場所で名工によって作られ、名工と使う者の威厳がつり合い、使う者の魂が生気となって放たれます。これが本質であることを教えていただきました。
The master, Mr Risuke Otake, tought us not only the sword technique but also a sword itself. The sword the master loved to use at that time was "Bizen Osafune Tsunehiro". It was perfectly a beautiful sword with the regular length (around 70cm), Sori of around 8 bu (2.4cm), and Bohi. The master demonstrated "Iai" by using the sword in DVD of Katori Shintoryu supervised by Nihon Budoka. You can see the demonstration even now through Youtube. It is very very beautiful indeed.
The master strongly pushed a middle of the sword with his hand, while placing a tip of the sword on floor of the Dojo. The sword was bent like a bow, and got back to the original one. The master said, "We can cut sharply with a good sword which never break off and bend like a bow".. The master said, "an edge of a sword is very strong to cut, but Mune ( back) of a sword is weak when it is strongly hit. The master knows everything about a sword through his hard work.
I was shocked by what he did because I thought a sword was sacred and life of Japanese men. According to him, a sword is a tool so that we should know what is good, bad, strong, and weak.
The master is so strict in the martial art that he has been continuously exploring what is a nature without pre-conceived notion of a stern custom and keeping dignity & authority. For it, the master is so humorous. He is so flexible like a willow managing a strong wind, not rigorous like a rock.
"Bizen Osafune Tsunehiro"became a sacred sword with dignity when the master used it. I knew a sacred sword was made by a sword maker at a sacred place, and dignity between a sword maker and an user was balanced, and spirit of the user gave the sword full of vigor . I have learned it is a nature.
