ある日、酒に溺れ、女に溺れ、堕落していた若侍が、香取神道流に一緒に入門したイケメン侍が急死したことを知らされました。 その若侍はイケメン侍の家にすぐに駆けつけたようです。イケメン侍の母親は、イケメン侍が老咳を患い、見る見る内に体力を失ったことを告げました。
イケメン侍は自分の死を悟り、毎日を過ごしていたようです。 そのような状態でも、恨めしいことを一言も口にせず、気分の良い時は縁側に座り、山々の緑が美しい、鳥のさえずりが愛らしい、空の青さが美しい、日の光の中ですべてが輝いていると力なく笑って、すべての森羅万象に合掌していたようです。 そして、香取神道流の巻打ちの素振りも出来なくなるほど弱っても、日々、生かせていただいているだけでありがたいと言っていたようです。
イケメン侍の母親は、せめて嫁をとり、子をもうけ、家族を持たせてやりたかったと号泣しました。 イケメン侍が、そのような境遇に落ちても、山々の美しさ、鳥のさえずり、空の青さ、日の光に感動し、そして、生きていることに感謝し続けた境地は何なんだと、若侍は衝撃を受けました。
若侍はその後、遊郭に通うことを止めました。 若侍は、急死したイケメン侍をもっと知るために、自分とどこが違うのかを考え続けました。 同じ山を見ても美しいと感じない自分、同じ鳥のさえずりを聞いても何も感動しない自分、同じ空を見ても何も思わない自分、日の光さえ感じない自分は何なのだと自問しながらも、イケメン侍は自分には見えない美しさ、自分には感じない素晴らしさ、自分には持ちえない感謝の気持ちをもち、人生の本質を見極めて生き貫いたと感じ始めました。
Oneday, the yound worrier being addicted to Sake and prostitute was notified that another nice-looking worrier, who had joined Katori Shintoryu together, passed away. The worried rushed to his house. The mother of another worrier said that he suffered from tuberculosis and gradually lost his health.
He seemed to have spent everyday with knowing his death comes soon. He expressed his gratitude on everything of what happened around him even in such a condition without complaining. He felt a lot of beauties from mountains, bird singing, blue sky, sunlight when he sit on front aisle of his house with weak smile. He expressed thank-you for his daily life, even though he was too weak to practice Katori Shintoryu.
The mother cried bitterly by saying that she had him marry, get a baby and family. The worrier was very shocked by him who felt a lot of beauties from mountains, bird singing, blue sky, sunlight and gratitude on his terrible life.
He never went to a prostitute house again. He was continually thinking what difference between two of them to understand him. He was continually questining himself why he could not feel a lot of beauties from mountains, bird singing, blue sky, sunlight and gratitude on everything. However, he began believing that the worrier perfectly completed his life with knowing nature of his life.
