ある日、大事件が起こりました。 領主の弟である侍大将の一行が、香取神宮の参道を馬に乗って本殿に向かう途中で、神官に止められました。 神官は大鳥居を潜ってからは下馬して、参拝するように求めたようです。 それに怒った侍大将は、太刀を抜き神官に切りつけました。
神官は反射的に太刀をかわし、また、その太刀を何度もかわしました。 侍大将の怒りは頂点に達し、神官の腹を目がけて突いてきました。 神官はその突きをかわすと同時に、腰に差した護身用の短刀を抜き、目にも止まらぬ速さで侍大将の左小手に切りつけました。 侍大将の左腕が地面に落ちました。 香取神道流の半月之小太刀の技でした。 神官は香取神道流の目録を授与された門弟でした。
領主は弟の侍大将が侮辱されたという理由で神官の引き渡しを求めたようです。 香取神宮は大鳥居を潜ってからも下馬せず、参道を闊歩し続けた非礼を糾弾しました。 両者は一発即発の危機に直面しました。 香取神道流の門弟も領主につく者と香取神宮につく者と真二つに分かれました。
若侍もこの大事件に巻き込まれました。 領主からは禄を貰い、義もあるが、香取神宮には礼を尽くさなければならない。 多くの者が身の振り方を決める中で、若侍は未だに決められずにいました。 迷いに迷い、酒に逃避する日々が続きました。
ある日の朝、眼が覚めたら遊郭にいました。 ずきずきする二日酔いの頭で、昨夜の記憶を辿りました。断片的に蘇る記憶の中で、悩み続け、酒を飲み、母親に決断を迫られ、家を飛び出した自分を思い出しました。 正気では何も決められず、酒に逃げ、獣のように肉欲を貪る自分の正体に嫌悪しました。
自己嫌悪の中、若侍は何が本質なのかを考えました。 そして、流祖飯篠長威斎家直先生の教え”天地を敬い、人間として穏やかな一生を送ることこそ大事”を思い出しました。 どちらに組しても恩のある者と戦わなければならないのであれば、自分の誇りが地に落ちようとも、それを避け、人としての本質を生きようと思いました。 若侍は武士を捨て、百姓になることを決意しました。
One day, there was a serious incident. A group of a general riding on horse, who was a young brother of the landlord, was stopped by a priest of Katori Shrine, when they were on the way to the main building of Katori Shrine. The priest asked them not to ride on horse after the great gate of Katori Shrine. The general, who got angry, tried to strike him with his sword.
The priest escaped from the sword again and again. The furious general almost stabbed to the priest's belly. The priest escaped from it at the same time he cut the general's left hand so quickly with his short sword for his protection. The left hand dropped to ground. It was a sword technique of Katori Shintoryu, so-called "Hangetsu No Kodachi". The priest was a student of Katori Shintoryu who got a preliminary certificate, so-called "Mokuroku".
The landlord asked Katori Shrine to hand over the priest to them for insulting his brother. Katori Shrine accused a bad manner of his brother riding on horse after the great gate of Katori Shrine.
Both of them faced very serious crisis. Students of Katori Shintoryu devided into two. Some of them were on landlord's side, and the others on Katori Shrine's one.
The young worrier was also involved in the incident. He received salary from the landlord, but needed to repect Katori Shrine. He did not decide yet which side he should be on, even though most of people already decided. He escaped from the reality by drinking a lot of Sake.
In the morning of one day, he waked up at a prostitute house. He, who got heavy hangover, tried to track what happended last night. He remembered that he was very much worried, drank a lot of Sake, was strongly asked to make a decision by his mother, and got out of his house. He hated himself, who could not make a decision yet, escaped from the reality by drinking a lot of Sake, and had sexual desire like a beast.
He thought what was nature of human beings, while having self-hatred. He remembered the founder's word "live peacefully as a human beings while respecting nature ". He thought living according to nature of human beings to escape from the battle killing each other who knew each other, even if his pride was totally devastated. He decided to become a farmer by giving up being a worrier,
