領主と香取神宮の衝突は避けられました。しかし、どちらにも組しなかった若侍には大変な試練が待っていました。領主から免職の知らせが届きました。その日から、今まで同僚であった者達は冷たく、挨拶もしなくなりました。 そして、二人集まっては若侍を見て冷笑しました。
若侍の母親は禄を失ったことの不安に加え、先祖から続く武家としての誇りを保つことが出来なくなったことを嘆きました。 ある日、若侍は何も言わず、いつものように家事をこなしている嫁に”役職を失うことは覚悟のことであり、武家を捨て百姓になる”と告げました。 物静な嫁は大きく頷きました。 若侍は嫁の力強い頷きに安堵を覚えました。
若侍が免職し、百姓になり下がったことが知れ渡りました。 百姓になった若侍が鍬を担ぎ道を歩いていると、いままで頭を低くして挨拶していた百姓どもが嘲りました。 それでも、百姓になった若侍は嫁とともに、来る日も来る日も、湿地帯を一畝の田んぼに、熊笹が生い茂る山を二畝の畑に開墾してゆきました。
田畑の開墾に忙しい中、百姓になった若侍は流祖飯篠長威斎家直先生の道場に稽古に行きました。 香取神宮に組しなかった若侍を見る門弟の目は冷たく、誰も稽古を申し出る者がおりませんでした。 若侍は自ら長威斎先生に稽古を申し出ました。 長威斎先生は何も聞かず、入門した時と何も変わらず、厳しく稽古をつけてくれました。 その大きさと公平さに人間としての気高さを感じました。 周りから仲間外れにされ、自己の存在も誇りもずたずたにされながら、若侍はどのような境遇になろうとも人間として気高く生きようと自分に言い聞かせました。
若侍が百姓になって１年が過ぎました。 作物は思うように育たず、その日の夕餉にも困窮するようになりました。 ある夕方、百姓になった若侍のあばら家に以前の同僚が訪ねてきました。 その元同僚はたわいない話をして帰ってゆきました。 元同僚が帰った後に、一升の米袋が土間に残っておりました。 若侍は、真の友とは逆境にあるときに見極められると知りました。
A collision between the landlord and Katori Shrine was escaped. However, the young worrier, who did not support both sides, faced a difficulty. He received a notice of dismissal from the landlord. His collegues gave the cold shoulder to him without greeting. They sneered at him.
His mother was very much disappointed to lose opportunities of getting salary and maintaining pride of worrier's lineage. One day, he said to his wife, "I expected the dismissal and want to become a farmer by giving up being a worrier". His wife nodded. He was relieved by her nodding.
What he became a farmer was widely known. A lot of farmers, who had deeply bowed to him before, sneered at him when he walked. He cultivated marshes into paddy fields and mountains into upland fields together with his wife everyday.
The young worrier, who became a farmer, went to Dojo of the founder for the training. The followers gave the cold shoulder to him, who did not stand on Katori Shrine's side, and no body did the practice with him. He asked the founder for the training. The founder practiced with him very seriously without asking anythings and without any changes since he entered Katori Shintoryu. He felt nobility as human beings from his generosity and fairness. He said to himself, "I will become noble whatever happens to him", when his presence and pride were totally devastated by bullying.
One year had passed since he became a farmer. He faced a difficulty of having dinner together with his family due to poor yield of his crops. In the early evening of one day, his former collegue visited to his poor house. He go back to his home after talking about silly things. The young worrier, who became a farmer, found a bag of rice grain in his poor entrance after he got back. He understood he knew a real friend when he was at plight.
