香取神道流師範大竹利典先生が言われたことがあります。 それは平常心を保つことの重要性です。 大竹先生が、林弥左衛門先生のもと剣術の修行を積んでいた時のことのようです。 大竹先生は、とても大切な演武会で、先輩が礼をして演武を開始しようとしても何もできずに終了したのを目の当たりにしたようです。 その先輩はすでに免許を授かり、林弥左衛門先生の道場でも指折りの剣士であったようです。 見物人の多さと演武会の雰囲気に飲まれ、平常心が保てずに、頭の中が真っ白になって演武が出来なかったようです。
このように緊張した中で、平常心を保つことは容易ではありません。 ましてや、生死をかけた戦いの場で、死の恐怖とも闘いながら、平常心を保ち、持てる剣術の力をすべて出し切ることは至難の業です。 剣術の力が勝っていたにもかかわらず、戦いの場で平常心が保てずに命を落とした兵が少なからずいたと思います。
現在の社会でも平常心を保つことは重要です。 今日、息子が大学入試センター試験に出かけてゆきました。 息子は緊張のあまり、昨夜は眠れなかったようです。 大学入試センター試験のような特別な日に、学生さんに平常心を持って臨むことを求めても酷かもしれません。 どのような状況の中でも平常心を保つことは大人でも容易でないからです。 若者は、これからの人生の中でさまざま試練を乗り超え、自分の立ち位置が客観的に見えた時に、平常心が保てるようになります。
今、大学入試に挑んでいる学生さんが少しでも平常心を持って試験に臨めるように、私の高校の担任の先生がおしゃった言葉を贈ります。
”君が難しいと思った問題は他の学生にとっても難しい。 だから、慌てなくてもいい。 しかし、君が易しいと思った問題は他の学生にとっても易しい。だから、ケアレスミスは絶対にしてはいけない。”
これは、聖徳太子がおしゃった ”我必ずしも聖にあらず、彼必ずしも非にあらず、ともに是れ凡夫のみ”
に通じます。 すべての人間は等しく、皆、凡夫であるということです。 安心してください。 一所懸命に努力した学生の力、人間の力はそれほど、差がつくものではありません。

The master saw his seniors who performed nothing from the beginning until the end at a very important demonstration, when he had been learning from Mr Hayasgi, his master. The senior was already given the certificate and recognized as one of leading students. He could not perform because he could not keep his presence of mind due to many spectators and special atomosphere of the demonstration.
It is not easy to keep our presence of mind in such a situation. It is extremely difficult to keep our presence of mind and use our sword technique 100% in a battle field, while struggling with fear of death. There were many worriers who had much better sword technique than that of the opponent but were killed due to being panic in a battle field.
It is quite important to keep our presence of mind even in our time. Today, my son went out to take a university entrance examination. He seems to have not slept well last night due to being too nervous. It is too much to ask high school students thier presence of mind in such a special day. It is extremely difficult even for adults to keep our presence of mind in any situations. They will be able to keep thier presence of mind by overcoming a lot of future hurdles and knowing where they are very objectively in their life.
I would like to send them a message I was given from my high school teacher.
"A question you think difficult is one that is difficult for other students. So do not panic. A question you think easy is one that is easy for other students. So escape from a careless mistake."
There is a similarity with what the prince, Shotoku Taishi, said. "I am not great. He is not an idiot. Everybody is regular people." He said everybody equally was regular people. Do not be too much nervous There are no big difference in the ability among the students and people who made a great effort on it.
