京から帰った若侍は、里子に出した娘のことを思うようになりました。 身寄りのない子供たちを引き取り、一所懸命に育てている男の姿を見て、娘のことを思うようになりました。 武家のしきたりとか金がないとかの理由で、娘を手放したことを正当化してきた自分を責めるようになりました。
ある日、若侍は我慢ができず、娘を引き取った名主を訪ねてゆきました。 娘は５歳になっている筈でした。 遠くからでも、一目でも、娘の元気な姿を見たい思いでいっぱいでした。 若侍は、長い間、名主の家の前の大木の陰から中の様子を窺いました。 子供の気配は全くありませんでした。
若侍は名主の家に入り、娘のことを聞きました。 名主は、長い間、口を固く閉じて何も言いませんでしたが、若侍の責めのない真摯な言い様に応えて口を開きました。 里子として引き取った時に、名主の家には乳飲み児がなく、乳を与えるために乳飲み女児を持つ百姓に金銭とともに預けたことを知らされました。 そして、その百姓は健気に２人の女の子を育てたことを知らされました。
昨年の秋の不作により、その百姓は貧しく、日々の食べるのにも困るようになりました。 その百姓が家族を餓死から救うため、昨年末に２人の娘を売ったことを知らされました。 ２人の娘は幼いながらも、家族のために口減らしが必要で、年を越すために金銭が必要なことを察し、”必ず戻ってくる”と言って涙を流しながら売られて行ったそうです。
名主は地べたにひれ伏し謝罪し、その百姓を責めないように懇願しました。若侍は名主の手を取り感謝を表わし、その百姓にも今まで娘を育てていただいたことの感謝を伝えてほしいと言いました。娘の売られた先は容易に想像がつきます。愛しい娘に与えた試練を思うと若侍の胸は張り裂けんばかりでした。
戦後約７０年が経ちました。今は食べるものが氾濫し、赤線も廃止され、娘が売られることはありません。
しかし、化学肥料がなく、農薬もなかった終戦直後の時代には、栄養不足で作物が育たず、病害虫による凶作によって娘が売られたことがあります。それは１９５８年に施行された売春防止法により赤線が廃止されるまで続きました。 人間は忘れやすい動物です。 凶作により娘が売られた悲劇は５５年前までありました。そして、その悲惨さは山崎朋子さんが書いた”サンダカン八番娼館”を読めば分かります。 遠く異国の地に身売りされた乙女たちのすべての墓碑は、遠い祖国日本の地の方角を向いて並んでいるそうです。
両親を思い、兄弟, 姉妹を思い、今でも日本に帰れずに眠っています。
The young worrier, who got back from Kyoto, remembered his daughter who had been adopted. He was remembered by the man who grew children without their parents in Kyoto. He reproached himself who gave his daughter for custom of worrier's family or no money to grow.
One day, he was no longer patient and visited a head of farmers who adopted his daughter. She was thought to be 5 years old. He wanted very mcuh to see her from a distance. He waited for a long time behind a big tree to see her in a house of the farmer. There was no sign of her there.
He entered a house of the farmer and asked him about his daughter. The farmer said nothing about her for a long time, and then began talking for his honest attitude and no blaming the farmer. He was told that the farmer did not have a newborn at the time and gave the baby with small money to other farmer who had a girl newborn. He was told that the farmer gave them milk equally with their love.
The famer's family became extremely poor due to a bad crop harvest last fall , and then had a difficulty to get daily food for his family. He was told that the farmer sold two daughters at end of last year to rescue his family from starvation. Two of the daughters understood reduction of family members to share food and neccesity of money to live for the family, though both of them were small girls. They left their house with a lot of tears.
The head of farmers expressed deep sorry and asked him not to blame the farmer. The young worrier expressed his deep appreciation, and then asked him to convey his gratitude to the farmer. He could easily guess who bought them. He almost lost his consciousness when he thought about ordeal he gave his daughter.
Approximately 70 years have passed since end of world war II. Recently we have a lot of foods without tradegy girls were sold due to ban of prostitution. However, we must keep in our mind that girls were sold due to a bad crop harvest at an era of right after WWII when there were no chemical fertilizer and pesticides. It happened until 1958 when the prostitution ban treaty was effective. Human beings are an animal that easily forgets. There was a tragedy grils were sold 55 years ago due to a bad crop harvest. We can learn the tragedy from a book titled "8th prostitute house in Sandakan" written by Ms Tomoko Yamazaki. All of tombs of girls who were sold to foreign countries from Japan have been facing direction toward Japan. They have been sleeping in the tombs while thinking about their parents, brothers and sisters.
