流祖飯篠長威斎家直先生の使いとして上京した若侍は、加茂川の辺に立ち寄りました。そこは、長威斎先生から貰った６つの握り飯の１つを残し、隣近所にすべて分け与えた女が居た場所です。 相変わらず多くのあばら家が並んでおりました。 大雨が来たら水かさが増し、命の危険に晒される場所です。
ふと見ると、男が弱弱しい老婆を背負いあばら家から出てきました。 幼い女の子と男の子が、その後に従い出てきました。 ４人は蓆に座り、春の日を浴びておりました。 若侍はほのぼのとしたものを感じ、香取の地に残してきた家族を思いました。
若侍は４人に近づき、”母上様とお子達とご一緒でうらやましい” とその男に話しかけました。 すると、その男は、”母親でもないし、自分の子でもない”と応えました。 老婆は戦乱で家族を失い、子供たちは飢餓で両親を失い、その男も飢餓で両親を失い、老婆に育てられたことを知らされました。 若侍は、”恩返しですか？”とその男に言いました。 その男は鋭い目で、”恩を借りたことはないし、返したこともない”と言い返しました。 若侍は打算を含んだ自分の言い様に気まずさを感じ、そこに留まる事が出来ませんでした。
若侍は加茂川の土手に立ち、通りすがりの貧しい身なりの女に、”あの男は何者か”と尋ねました。 その女は、”あのお方はここの長で、身寄りのない者達を引き取り、その者達のために、朝に川で魚をとり、山で薪を集め、昼に人足として金を稼ぎ、夕にはあばら家を回り皆の無事を確認し、夕餉を作って養っている”と応えました。
若侍に衝撃が走りました。 地位を追わず、金も求めず、ただ、目の前の困っている人のために自分の持てる時間、物、金を捧げる男の姿に天賦の善人（菩薩）を感じました。 ”かくありたい”と強く思いました。 人の価値とは、地位でなく、金でもなく、自分の持てる物を捧げ、人のために尽くすことだと確信しました。
２年前の３月１１日に東日本大震災が起こりました。 北海道に住む私の知り合いに大震災が起こってからほぼ毎週末、被災地に足を運びボラティア活動を続けている青年がおります。会社では偉くもなく、目立つこともありません。 世間から注目されるためでなく、政治家になるための売名行為でもありません。 ただ、そこで困っている人を救うためです。 天賦の人です。 合掌。
The young worrier, who was asked to hand over a letter to 8th Shogun from the founder, visited Kamo river. That was the place where woman who had been given 6 rice balls by the founder and had given 5 ones to neighbours lived. There were still a lot of poor shelters. The place became very dangerous in case of heavy rainfall.
The worrier saw a man carrying old woman on his back and getting out of a poor shelter. Infant girl and boy followed them. Four of them were enjoying sunshine of Spring. The worrier remembered his family by seeing them.
He made an approach to them and said, "You looks very happy with your mother and kids". He responded, "Neither my mother nor my kids". He was told that the old woman's family had been killed in a battle and the kids' parents had been dead by famine. The man whose parents also had been dead by famine was raised by the old woman. He said to the man, "it is your obligation". The man said to him, "I have never felt an obligation". He could not stay there because what he said sounded too mercenary.
He asked a poor woman passing by him when he was on bank of the river. The woman said to him, "The man is a leader of the place, inviting people who lost their family and feeding them by catching fish in the river at very early in the morning & labour work in daytime & securing their safety/ serving dinner for them in the evening".
He was very much moved. He felt buddha from the man who devoted his resources such as time, money, everything to people needing a help from others without chasing high position and money.
He thought he wanted to be like him. He firmly believed that value as a human being is whether or not we can devote everything we have to people, neither position nor money.
The great earthquake of eastern Japan happened on March 11 two years ago. I know a man living in Hokkaido who has been spending almost every week-end for his voluntary works since the March 11. He is not in high position and not visible in the company. The reason is not to be visible and not sell his name to be a politician in the future. It is just to rescue people who need a help from others. He is a good guy by nature like buddha. God & Buddha bless people.
