John Taverner(1490 - 1545/46)

The Westerne Wynde

This Mass is another of Taverner's masterpieces. I do not know the origin of the melody used, but it was very popular at the time, and many composers used this melody in their masses. I would like to pick up works by Tye and Sheppard in the future. There are two manuscripts that were available this time. I have focused on the gyffard partbooks because they are more useful later, but there are a few errors that stand out, so I have corrected them in the Sadler partbooks. It is really helpful to be able to use more than one codex.
