English Tips: Mastering “A,” “An,” and “The” – A Simple Guide to Articles

At Future Education, we support English learners of all ages as they build confidence and communication skills through practical, everyday language use. Today, we’d like to share a quick tip from our lessons—something that challenges many learners: how to use the articles “a,” “an,” and “the.”

本日は、レッスンの中からよくあるお悩み「a」「an」「the」の使い方について、皆様と一緒に考えてみたいと思います。

上級者でも混乱してしまうことがあります！この記事では、冠詞の仕組みを分かりやすく解説し、正しく使えるようになるためのコツを紹介します。
🧱 What Are Articles?
Articles are words that go before nouns. They help us understand which thing we are talking about.
冠詞は名詞の前に置く言葉で、どのものについて話しているのかを分かりやすくしてくれます。
There are two types of articles (冠詞には、次の2種類があります)
Indefinite articles: a / an
Definite article: the
🟡 “A” and “An” – Talking About Any One Thing 特定でない1つのものを表すとき
Use a before words that start with a consonant sound
子音で始まる単語の前には a を使います
I saw a cat in the garden.
She wants to buy a book about art.
Use an before words that start with a vowel sound
母音で始まる単語の前には an を使います
He is an artist.
We saw an elephant at the zoo.
✅ Tip: It’s the sound, not the spelling!
Say: “an hour” (because it sounds like “our”), but “a university” (because it sounds like “you-niversity”).
ポイント：大事なのはスペルではなく、発音です！
たとえば、「hour」は「アワー」のように発音するので an hour、
「university」は「ユニバーシティ」と発音するので a university を使います。
🔵 “The” – Talking About Specific Things 特定のものを表すとき
Use the when the listener already knows what you are talking about
聞き手が何について話しているかすでに分かっている場合は、the を使います
I saw a cat.The cat was black and white.
Can you pass me the pencil on your desk?
✅ Use the when there is only one of something
そのものが1つしか存在しない場合にも使います
The sun is shining.
I visited the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Here are some books our members have read recently. Let’s look at the titles.
こちらは、FEのメンバー様が最近読んだ本です。タイトルを見てみましょう。
“It might be an apple.”An apple refers to any apple that exists in the world, not a specific one.
an apple は、世界中のどのリンゴでもよく、特定されていないリンゴを指しています。
“The three bears.” The three bears who are mentioned in this story, Papa Bear, Mama Bear, and Baby Bear are specific bears, not just any bears.
“Old McDonald Had a farm.” We say “a farm” because it's the first time we talk about it. We don’t know anything about the farm yet—just that he had one.
Later, we might say “the farm” when it's clear which farm we're talking about. For example in this book one of our members read:
その後、どの牧場のことかがはっきりしたら、the farm と言います。
たとえば、私たちのメンバーの1人が読んだこの本の中では：
The pups don’t save any farm, they save the farm in this book.
子犬たちが助けるのは、どこかの牧場ではなく、この本に出てくる特定の牧場です。
