Phonics: A Useful Tool for Learners of All Ages・大人にも役に立つフォニックス

In today's post, we'd like to introduce the importance of phonics, a crucial learning tool that is often overlooked in discussions regarding English as a second language.
Phonics is a method of teaching language learners (both native and non-native) to read and pronounce words through the study of the sounds of the written language. In English, phonics focuses on the sounds made by each letter, as well as by each grouping of letters. This goes for vowels such as "a", vowel pairs such as "oe", consonants such as "t", and consonant pairs such as "ch". Once a learner is able to recognize all the sounds associated with each letter and letter pair, they will be able to reproduce those sounds when they see groupings of letters, regardless of the order. All of this is to say that without phonics, a learner will not be able to read!
As with most things in English learning, there are also several exceptions to typical phonics rules. For example, a student might first read the word "said" with the same vowel as in the word "rain", because they learned that "ai" makes a certain kind of vowel sound. As the student practices reading and becomes exposed to more and more words, they will eventually be able to remember these exceptions as well.
