GRS. 9-12 CLASS DAY

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors enjoyed their Class Day on Thursday. Coupled with Fall Break on Friday, it provides a relaxing end to the first quarter of the school year.

Freshmen spent the day at Sherwoods. Sophomores were at Waimanalo Beach. And juniors had their fun in the sun at Kaiona Beach.

PRO BASEBALL PLAYERS

Recent graduates Shane Sasaki '19 and Micah Yonamine '19 returned to campus on Tuesday to speak to a pair of Literature of Sport classes. Back in June, Sasaki was drafted in the third round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. Yonamine was drafted in the 29th round by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Both of them played rookie ball in the Gulf Coast League this past summer. They spoke about their experiences in the minor leagues, on and off the field, and answered a wide variety of questions.

2019 ‘IOLANI  BASKETBALL KIDS’ CLINIC RECAP

On Sunday and Monday (October 13th and 14th), kids from Kindergarten through the 8th Grade participated in the Annual ‘Iolani Basketball Kids’ Clinic at ‘Iolani School.  The participants were able to engage with current players from the ‘Iolani Boys & Girls Varsity Basketball Programs, along with coaches and past alumni.

The clinic focused on individual fundamentals, such as ball handling, passing, shooting and defense, and built its way up to emphasizing team play, and talking about the important values of the “one team” philosophy that helped build one of the most successful program in Hawai’i over the last 20 years.  The ‘Iolani Basketball Community would like to thank all of the participants, volunteers and supporters for making the two-day clinic another successful experience for all involved.

BOWLING

Congratulations to the Boys JV Bowling team for defeating the Saint Louis Blue team in a 3-game roll-off to claim the ILH JV title on Friday night.  They had solid contribution throughout the season from all of their team members: Dylan Yoshikawa '22, Chrisitan Campos '21, Dillon Shintani '22, Jase Ide '22, Dylan Dinio '21, Jacob Ikeda '22, and Matthew Nakamoto '21.  The boys were coached by Alan Acierto and Kevin Kaneshiro.

With a sweep of their final games on Tuesday, the Varsity Girls Bowling team secured their third consecutive ILH championship.  With a bye in the last set of games for the varsity season they awaited the final standings
from Friday night's matches to see if their individual scoring averages would hold up. Last year our varsity girls occupied the top four positions.  At the end of this amazing season, one would guess that this is perhaps the first time a team has ever finished with five team members claiming the top five spots in the final standings. Congratulations to Ashlyn Okazaki '20, Seobeen Chang '20, Rachel Iha '21, Logan Akau '21, Carianne Takeuchi '22, and Jordan Luke '20 for a true One Team effort.  The girls were coached by Michelle Jung and Bruce Akau.
