The students from the 10th grade Leadership class, have been working on a project this semester that they would love to share with you. Their project is called "Notes to Inspire." It's a set of 10 greeting cards designed by the class and meant to share the stories of inspirational people in our community who have overcome adversity.
Each card features a story, quote, and handprint from an amazing individual who we were fortunate enough to interview this semester (many of whom are tied to `Iolani in some way). Sets of 10 cards are selling for $20 and all profits will be going to Abilities Unlimited, a local non-profit that focuses on building inclusive communities that empower individuals with disabilities.
Cards include profiles of:
Summer Kozai: an 'Iolani alumna and quadruple amputee (and Trooper, her trusty service dog!)
Garrick Lau: `Iolani alumnus and quadriplegic
Danh Nguyen: `Iolani Physical Plant retiree and former prisoner of war
Laurie Horita: an 'Iolani parent, breast cancer survivor, and 2015’s Mother of the Year
Tina Moore: an aspiring social worker, foster care child, and KA`I student
Lucy: Jenna Yoshimi's '19 paralyzed dog
Reverend Yoshiaki Fujitani: World War II veteran, Buddhist priest, and a former `Iolani grandparent
Sabrina and Larissa: two clients of Abilities Unlimited
Stella Saito: centenarian and maker of baby blankets for Navy-Marine newborns
Vincent Jones: a three-year-old suffering from Spinocerrebellar Ataxia Type 29
You can purchase cards at the Lower and Upper School Main Offices as well as the KA`I Office in SCIL (cash or checks made out to `Iolani School). You can also use credit card by clickinghere.
Spring Jazz & Ballet Showcase: The Greatest Showman
The Greatest Showman came to town! The In School Jazz and Ballet Program, along with the Lower School Contemporary Jazz students, performed to a jam-packed house at the beautifully renovated Leeward Community College Theater on Saturday May 11. Special Guest artist, Darin Kaai of the 24/7 Dance Force, performed a moving duet with Taylor Lau ‘20 to Rewrite the Stars bringing audience members to tears.
To close The Greatest Showman, Kaai choreographed and performed to I’m Alive demonstrating his strong showmanship and technique. Other guest artists included Ringmaster, Andrew Sakaguchi, and magician Alyssa Kimura ‘22, along with seven unicyclists, who lit up the stage with a well-orchestrated circus number. Rounding out the evening, the dancing Seniors of ‘19 performed a dynamic jazz number, and closed the show with a beautiful rendition of Mele Ohana.
Mama Mia!
This "feel good" musical includes some of Abba's greatest hits: Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Winner Takes It All, SOS, and MORE...... Local actor and Castle HS graduate Kimee Balmilero (Hawaii 5-0, Magnum P.I.) was in the original broadway cast of Mamma Mia and came to work with our kids earlier this spring.
She shared that the show opened on Broadway Oct 18, 2001, a few short weeks after 9/11. Mamma Mia became to be a refuge from the stress and heartbreak happening in New York City at that time..... and continues to delight audiences around the world. Period 5 class performed on Friday and Period 6 class on Saturday.
