Lifesmarts in Orlando
The Lifesmarts team arrived in Orlando friday evening for the national competition next week. Jetlag was strong due to the overnight flight, but the team members are ready to compete. Registration, welcome and first round of competition began on Saturday. The first round of competition concluded with a “sister team” activity. Pictured on the left are the students from Connecticut who joined our team members to complete a task involving mobile identity theft, one of the fastest growing areas of fraud nationwide. They were one of several groups to get a perfect score!
From Coach Rubasch yesterday: “The team woke up this morning to the good news that the overall scores had been posted after 6 rounds during the night. Our ‘Iolani team currently sits in third place going into a final preliminary round this morning. I send you this great news because you never know how things are going to go during the competition, and there is a lot more ahead of them. I was quite proud of our team yesterday, in particular Jayson’s ability to manage the team as their captain. He is clear minded during every phase of their challenge here and it is my pleasure to watch him and his teammates work.”
From Coach Rubasch today: “Our team was upset late this morning by a solid all-senior led Wyoming team. It was a very exciting head-to-head match that went to the wire and was settled by a three-question tie-breaker after regulation was finished. The team members were very disappointed, but I shared with them the fact that ‘Iolani was in that same seeded position (13th) when our team upset Pennsylvania in the 2015 tournament. It was a similar situation in that the Wyoming team then also upset Virginia to advance to tomorrow’s semifinals. This year, the semifinals will have Wyoming, Illinois, New Hampshire, and two time defending champions Pennsylvania. I’ve got a feeling that New Hampshire is the strong favorite this year.”
JV Track and Field Championships
On Saturday, the JV track and field team finished their season with the ILH championship meet held at Kamehameha. The boys team was led by Trevor Kan ’20 who placed first in both the 110 and 300 hurdle events. Our boys 4x400 m. relay team also took first, helping to boost the boys team to a second place overall team score.
The girls team was led by strong individual performances by Alexsandra Huntimer ’21 and Angela Oasay ’20 who respectively took first and second in the discus event Kayla Mukai ’21 jumped second in the triple jump, and Kylie Calabrese-Kenny ’22 ran an impressive 100 and 200 to take second in both events. The girls team finished with an overall team place of second.
