This past week, eight ‘Iolani students participated in the 62nd Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair with almost 450 student projects from across the state competitively selected through school and district science fairs. Students prepared posters and research binders documenting their research work and then presented orally to panels of judges.
Congratulations to these young researchers and many thanks to their mentors as well as to the administration for their support of the Sullivan Center Research Lab where most of these students conducted their research. Seven of these students were also part of the Honors Scientific Research class taught by Dr. Yvonne Chan.

4th Grade Big Island Trip
It was still dark when the Class of 2027 boarded Hawaiian Airlines Flight 108 to Kona, embarking on the annual Fourth Grade Big Island Trip. The excitement in their faces and voices explained how much they had been looking forward to this experience since Kindergarten.
The three full days of adventures included visiting historical and cultural places that they had only just read about in the classroom. Now they were able to walk in the footsteps of Kamehameha the Great at his heiau (temple) at Pu’ukohola & Ahu’ena. They visited an ancient pu’uhonua or place of refuge that long ago protected kapu breakers and losers of wars & battles.
They experienced what it was like to live at the turn of the century in Kona at the Uchida House & coffee plantation. They explored Kailua town, visiting places like the Moku’aikaua Church, the first Christian Church in Hawaii. They touched the stars and learned about the birth and growth of the Hawaiian Islands at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo. An unforgettable non-educational treat was enjoying a delicious breakfast at Roy's Restaurant in Waikoloa, generously sponsored by Roy Yamaguchi himself.
The best part of the trip was the camaraderie of the students, embracing old friends and making new ones. They learned to get along with each other and become more independent, especially for those students who had never been away from their parents before.
Many came back with a sense of empowerment and many fond memories that they will share with their classmates as they go through their years at ‘Iolani and beyond.
