Twenty-seven public and private high schools across Hawaii competed in the Japan Wizards Statewide Academic Team Competition on Saturday, February 23rd at Hawaii Tokai International College in Kapolei. The event is sponsored by the Japan America Society of Hawaii, and our two 'Iolani teams worked hard these past few months preparing for the contest by studying a wide range of topics related to Japan including arts, culture, food, geography, history, Japan-Hawaii ties, language, literature, politics, environmental issues and sports.
Our Level A team (Isabella Tello-Ballejos '21, Riley Mason '21, and Zac Charles '22) won 1st place for their video submission in the "Most Representative of the Environmental Theme" category. They will receive a free trip to Japan this summer. Our Level B team (Tierra Nakamura '21, Adrienne Kaneshiro '21, and Trevor Oshiro '20) placed first in their division and was given the Tateuchi Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship perpetual trophy for being the top overall scoring team in the competition. They will also receive a free trip to Japan this summer. The Japanese teachers are proud of our team members for working so hard and representing our school well.
Colleen Hanabusa speaks to the Young Democrats Club
On Tuesday, February 19th, The Young Democrats Club hosted Guest Speaker, former Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa. In the Sullivan Seminar room, Hanabusa shared her experience as a congresswoman and what makes a Democrat a Democrat. About two dozen ‘Iolani students listened to her interesting and innovative speech.
Boys Basketball
The winter sports season wrapped up on Saturday with our boys basketball team coming from behind to edge Kailua, 48-46, to finish third in the HHSAA State Championship Tournament. On Thursday, our Raiders beat OIA champion Moanalua in a thrilling overtime game, 52-47.
That quarterfinal victory in the Menehune's home gym setup the fourth 'Iolani vs. Punahou game of the season. The Buffanblu prevailed in that hard-fought semifinal, 48-42. Congratulations to the players and coaches on another exciting season.
Wrestling
The wrestling season also came to a close last week with the HHSAA State Championships, held on Wednesday and Thursday at the Blaisdell Arena. The boys team finished 10th.
