The 6th graders recently went on simulated space missions at the Challenger Center at Barber's Point Elementary school. The purpose of each mission was to rendezvous with Comet Halley and build a probe to gather information. The students prepared for their missions through problem-solving activities that required skills in communication, data collection and analysis, robot building and physics.
Students took on the responsibilities of chosen roles on their mission teams such as Life Support, Navigation and Medical, and solved challenges such as radioactive meteoroids, low oxygen supplies and a damaged solar array en route to their rendezvous with the comet.
