I like apples grown in Aomori.

この複数形は漠然と「青森産のりんご」を指している。具体的な数量は示されていない。


日本で生産されたリンゴの５７．５％は青森が栽培している。

Aomori produces 57.5% of the apples grown in Japan.


この the apples は「日本国内の総生産量」という定まった数字を示している。57.5% が分子、the apples は分母に当たる。

個数の不定冠詞

There is an apple on the table.
（テーブルの上にリンゴが一つある。）
There is two apples on the table.
（テーブルの上にリンゴが二つある。）


個数をあらわすとき、一つの場合は、an apple となる。

one of many の不定冠詞

This apple is an apple which she grew.
このリンゴは、彼女が栽培したリンゴです。


この時の an apple は単に一つあるという意味ではなく、one of many 他にも栽培しているリンゴのうちの一つという意味をもつ。つまり、


an apple = one of apples

これが

This apple is the apple which she grew.

となった場合は、only one 「彼女が育てた唯一のリンゴ」という意味になる。



代表の不定冠詞

An apple is an sweet fruit.
（リンゴは甘い果物です。）

この an apple は単に一個だけ甘いのではなく、その他のリンゴもおなじく甘いことを意味している。単数形をその他の代表として使う方法もある。
