➫ここで did you と過去形が用いられているのは、「丁寧表現」
➫距離をとり「引いた」感触の過去形が、丁寧さを生み出している

might ☞ may の控えめ表現
「ひょっとしたらいいのではないか」という意味合い

→ May I ~? の丁寧さにつながる
may の「許可」は may のイメージ「開かれたドア」から派生
→ 権威ある者が目下の者にドアを開け、通してあげるニュアンス
