Opening Talk

Today's Dialogue

Doug and Shiho

D: Here we are, Shiho, I had to take you to this place at least once.

S: It's an American diner, right?

D: Yes, but the menu is unique to Texas. Steak and eggs is their specialty.

S: I've never had steak for breakfast before.

D: It's really good. How would you like it?

S: I'd like my steak medium rare.

D: Yeah, me too. I like my eggs scrambled.

S: That sounds good. How about some coffee?

D: Sure. With milk and sugar?

S: I prefer my coffee black.

D: OK.

Practice

R: OK, everyone, are you ready to practice? For today's practice, we want to keep in mind the equality between the 目的語 and the 説明語句. So my steak イコール medium rare, OK? So keep that feeling in mind as we practice.

D: That's right. Let's get to it.

R: Repeat after me.

my coffee = black

my coffee = black

All together.

I prefer my coffee black.

D & R: Great work.

Grammar in Action

(1) I'd like my hotdog plain. I don't like mustard or ketchup.

(2) Take it easy. I'll see you after I get back.

(3) I want your report on my desk first thing tomorrow morning.

Ending Talk

O:Hey, David. Why do you want your eggs on a separate plate?

D:Ah, some people are very sensitive to flavors mixing. So maybe you have eggs on one plate and pancakes on another. They just don't want their flavors or foods to mix.

O:Uh-huh.

R:Usually I don't like mixing my food, but pancakes and eggs is the only exception, and bacon, of course.

O, R, and D:Bye.
