詩は、実際的で活動的な人間にはとても経験とは思えない実に夥しい経験を、一つに凝集したものであり、その凝集から生じた一つの新しい何ものかなのである。この凝集作用は、意識的に、或いは熟慮したからといって、起こるものではない。これらの経験は「思い出される」ようなものではない。ただ、ある雰囲気の中で、つまり、その事件に受動的に注意を払うという意味においてのみ「静謐」なある雰囲気の中で、最終的にまとまってゆくのである。勿論、話はこれで終わるわけではない。詩を書く場合、意識的に、また熟慮を重ねてなさなければならぬ多くのことがある。事実、下手な詩人は、えてして、意識的にならなければならない場合に無意識的になるし、また、無意識的にならなければならない場合に意識的になるものである。こういった二つの誤ちが、その詩人を「個性的」ならしめがちである。詩は、情緒を解き放つことではなく、情緒から逃避することである。詩は、個性の表現ではなく、個性からの逃避である。しかし、勿論、個性と情緒をもっている詩人たちだけが、これらからの逃避を願うことがどういう意味であるかを知っているのである。

It is a concentration, and a new thing resulting from the concentration, of a very great number of  experiences which to the practical and active person would not seem to be experiences at all; it is a concentration which does not happen consciously or of deliberation.These experiences are not "recollected," and they finally unite in an atmosphere which is tranquil" only in that it is a passive attending upon the event. Of course this is not quite the whole story.  There is a great deal, in the writing of poetry, which must be conscious and deliberate. In fact, the bad poet is usually unconscious whe re he ought to be conscious, and conscious whe re he ought to be unconscious. Both errors tend to make him "personal." Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality.  But,  of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things.
