米倉放医研理事長の挨拶によると:
Dear colleagues,
Carbon ion radiotherapy has been a promising modality of cancer treatment since the pioneering work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL) in the United States in 1970s. The National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) of Japan was the world's first medically-dedicated carbon ion therapy center, and has been in operation for more than 13 years. Clinical experience derived at NIRS have seen carbon ion radiotherapy living up to its promise. A second carbon ion therapy center in Japan has been established at Hyogo and a third will be established in Gunma in 2009. In Europe, the Gesellschaft fr Schwerionenforschung mbH (GSI) in Germany has led carbon ion radiotherapy since 1997. Based on their success, more carbon ion therapy centers are planned or under construction in Germany, Italy and Austria.
In view of this, I believe it is high time to summarize topics related to carbon ion radiotherapy. With this in mind, we have organized this international symposium on Progress in Heavy Ion Radiotherapy. This symposium will provide a substantive overview of the latest issues related to carbon ion radiotherapy from physical, biological and clinical points of view.
It is our great honor to invite as speakers the leading experts in this field from GSI, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ), Ochsner Medical Center, Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO), Gunma University, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Tokyo Metropolitan University, National Cancer Center, Hyogo Ion Beam Medical Center (HIBMC) and RIKEN. Furthermore, I am very proud that five of the speakers participating in this symposium are from the Research Center of NIRS.
The final goal of this symposium is to promote the exchange of research and collaboration among all participants. On behalf of the staff organizing this symposium, I look forward to exciting discussions by all speakers and participants and hope this symposium will contribute to their future collaborations toward scientific breakthroughs.
