そもそもfailという動詞は他動詞なのか？

Oxford Dictionaryを引くと1番目に [intransitive, transitive]と書かれていますので自動詞または他動詞であるということです。しかし、辞書に書かれている例文のどれが他動詞でどれが自動詞か？が書かれていません。下記が、その例文です。1)~4)は自動詞だとすぐにわかりますが5~7)は自動詞なのか他動詞なのか判断がつきません。皆さんは「to不定詞の　to meetやto deliver,to be a hitは不定詞の名詞的用法だから他動詞に決まってるじゃないか」と思うでしょうねえ。

1. not succeed [intransitive, transitive] to not be successful in achieving something
   • 1)Many diets fail because they are boring.
   • 2)Ultimately all their efforts failed.
   • 3)I failed in my attempt to persuade her.
   • 4)He failed in his bid for the presidency.
   • 5)The department failed to meet its sales targets.
   • 6)They promised a lot, but utterly failed to deliver.
   • 7)The song can't fail to be a hit (= definitely will be a hit).

じゃあ、皆さんにお聞きしますが下記の例文のfailも他動詞だとお考えですか？もし他動詞だとおっしゃるなら引用元のOxford Dictionaryに何と書いてあるかを確認してください。

何と書いてありましたか？

3  [intransitive] to not do somethingと書いてあります。そうです、これらの例文の場合は自動詞なのです。

S+fail+to doのfailが他動詞なのか自動詞なのか、一体どちらなのか直ぐに判別できますか？できないんじゃないですか？それにもかかわらずto doは不定詞の名詞的用法であり目的語だと言い張るのですか？

さらに、お聞きしますがfailが自動詞の場合のto doは、じゃあ、どういう意味になるのでしょうか？目的を表す副詞的用法の〜するために、ですか？結果を表す不定詞ですか？明確に説明できますか？
