物語の主人公はカナダに住む少女ローレル。アイルランドの祖父母を訪ねた休暇中に双子のオナーを突然の事故で失い、深い喪失感を抱えている。オナーは本当は死んでいないのかも？妖精に連れ去られたのかも?――ローレルはオナー探しの旅を始める決意をする。
The story follows Laurel, a girl who lives in Canada. While spending her holidays in Ireland with her grandparents, she loses her twin sister, Honor, in a sudden accident. Laurel is left with an overwhelming sense of loss, but what if Honor didn't really die? What if she was taken by the fairies instead? Holding on to that possibility, Laurel decides to set out on a journey to find her sister.
ローレルは旅の途中で妖精や神々に遭遇し、妖精から囚われの身となっている「夏の王」を助け出してほしいと懇願される。〈夏至祭〉の前夜にかがり火を灯す役目は〈夏の王）にしか許されていないからだ。オナーがその役を担うはずだったのに、失敗して人間世界と妖精世界の狭間に落ちてしまっているのだという。ローレルはオナーのために「夏の王」救出に向かう。
Along the way, Laurel encounters fairies and ancient gods, and the fairies beg her to help rescue the Summer King, who is being held captive. Only the Summer King is allowed to light the bonfire on the eve of the Midsummer Festival. Honor was supposed to take on that role, but she failed, and as a result, she fell into the space between the human world and the fairy realm. For Honor's sake, Laurel agrees to go and save the Summer king.
「夏の王」が誰なのか、オナーが人間界で死んだと思われることになった顛末も知ることとなった。妖精国を救うのは、古から人間の役目なのだ。〈夏至のかがり火〉が灯され、妖精国とアイルランドを結び付ける絆は守られた。
In the end, she finally uncover the truth about who the Summer King really is, and how Honor came to be believed dead in the human world. Saving the fairy realm has, since ancient times, been a task entrusted to humans. When the Midsummer bonfire is finally lit, the bond between the fairy kingdom and Ireland is restored, and the balance between the two worlds is preserved.
