1992年10月3日、オコナーは、米国の『サタデー・ナイト・ライブ』に出演し、生放送中に「真の敵」だとしてローマ教皇ヨハネ・パウロ2世の写真を破ったことにより大きな物議を醸した。
当初、番組では、アルバム『Am I Not Your Girl?'』からの2曲、"Success Has Made a Failure of Our Home "と "Scarlet Ribbons "を歌う予定だった。 しかし、ライブ出演の前日、彼女は後者のパフォーマンスを、児童虐待に抗議する歌詞に改訂されたボブ・マーリーの1976年の曲「War」のアカペラ演奏に変更し、パフォーマンスの終わりに、彼女は思いがけずローマ法王ヨハネ・パウロ2世の写真を破り捨てた。カトリック教会では聖職者による長年の性的虐待や隠ぺい工作が行われていた。

大ブーイングを浴びながらボブ・マーリーの「War」を歌った。
オコナーは母親から虐待を受けていた。
1979年、13歳の時、両親が離婚した後、母と離れ、再婚した父のもとで暮らすこととなった。
15歳の時、万引きや不登校で「 Magdalene asylum（マグダラの保護施設 」に送られた。
この保護施設は、Magdalene laundries（マグダラの洗濯所）としても知られ、収容された女性や女児に対する虐待が行われていた。アイルランドのダブリンの旧修道院の敷地内で夥しい遺骨の集団墓地が発見され、国連の子どもの権利委員会の調査が入り、補償制度が設立されたが、国連の拷問禁止委員会の要求にもかかわらず虐待の生存者の補償は行われていない。
