ミズーリ州セントルイス生まれ。アメリカの最も知られた黒人女流自伝作家。20代前半までコックやバスガイド、ダンサー、ウェイトレスなどの職業を転々とした。30代で歌手、女優として認められた後、友人の作家ジェームス・ボールドウィンの励ましにより文筆活動を開始。'69年に出版された『歌え、翔べない鳥たちよ』がベストセラーになった。キング牧師の要請で公民権運動にも深く関わり、力強い詩が差別される人々の支えとなった。'93年、クリントン大統領就任式で"On the Pulse of Morning"を朗読した。
