I was barbecuing outside when this little guy came by. I said “Hi Toad!” And he said nothing back to me, but my point is, in English, it is not a frog, it is a toad. In Japanese, toads and frogs are both かえる (kaeru) , but in English these guys are toads, and frogs are the green guys who live near water.
庭でBBQをしていたら、カエルちゃんがたずねてきました。”Hi toad!” とあいさつしましたけど、何も返事がなかった。とにかく、”Hi frog!” じゃなくて、”Hi toad!” でした。そう、日本語だと、水の近くにすんでいるカエルも僕の縁側あたりにあらわれる雑司が谷のカエルも「カエル」というんだけど、英語だとこいつは思いっきり”Toad” です！
(ま、ガマガエルとかヒキガエルとかいろいろいるんだけど、普通の日常会話では全部カエルと言うんだよね？）
