- 英語の諺　「４　words」編　14
  （「４　words」の諺）14　Better bend than break.日本語訳折れるより曲がる方がいい。日本の諺としては、「風に柳」が近いでしょうか。標記の諺の状況は、嵐の中の木々の中で、幹や枝が折れてしまうものも、撓って受け流しているものもあり、後者の方が良いということです。「風に柳」は、まさに撓って、巧みに受け流している「bend」のケースと言えます。なお、「柳に風」と、逆バージョンも同じ意味になります。「break」を含む諺として、「It is the last straw that breaks the camel's back.」（ラクダの背骨を折るのは最後の藁一本である）、「Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking it.」（その法律を知らないことは違法行為の言い訳にはならない）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）13　Belly has no ears.日本語訳腹は耳を持たない。日本の諺としては、「腹が減っては戦はできない」、あるいは意訳すると、「衣食足りて礼節を知る」に対応しています。変化形として、「The belly has no ears.」があります。因みに、「腹が減っては～」には「An empty sack cannot stand upright.」（空の入れ物は真っすぐ立たない）、「衣食足りて～」には「Meat and cloth makes the man.」（食と服装が男を作る）が対応しています。「ear」を含む諺として、「Good advice is harsh to the ear.」（良い助言は耳に痛い）、「Go in one ear and out the other.」（一つの耳に入れ、もう一方から出す／馬耳東風）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）12　Beggars cannot be choosers.日本語訳乞食は選択者にはなれない。日本の諺として、「背に腹は代えられない」が対応しているとされていますが、むしろ、「貰いものに苦情」の方が近いと思います。変化形として、「cannot」が「can't」や「must not」に、あるいは、「Beggars」が「Beggars and borrowers」に代わったものがあります。また、意味の近い諺として、「Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.」（貰った馬の口の中を見るな）があります。「choose」を含む諺として、「Of two evils choose the lesser.」（二つの悪い物からはより少ないものを選べ）、「Never choose your women or your linen by the candlelight.」（あなたの連れ合いとリネンは六足の明かりのでは選ぶな）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）11　Beauty opens locked doors.日本語訳美貌は鍵がかかかったドアを開ける。日本の諺としてはピッタリなものは見当たりませんが、洋の東西を問わず、男は美人に弱いものです。物理的にも、比喩的にも、他の人なら入場を許されない場所も、美人が頼めば許可されるということです。「Beauty」を含む別の諺として、「Beauty is only skin-deep.」（美は皮一重にすぎない。）や「Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.」（美は見る者の目の中にある）があります。「open」を含む諺として、「When one door shuts, another opens.」（一つのドアが閉まる時、もう一つが開く／捨てる神あれば秘湯神あり）、「An open door may tempt a saint.」（開かれてドアは聖者を招くかも知れない）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）10　Beauty is only skin-deep.日本語訳美しさは単に皮膚一枚の深さである。日本の諺にはピッタリのものは見当たりません。さらに言えば、この発想は日本的ではないかも知れません。要は、表面的な見た目で物事を判断してはいけない、内面なり、本質を確認しなければならないということです。標記の変化形として「Beauty is only but skin-deep.」「Beauty is but skin-deep.」があります。「Beauty」を含む諺として、「Beauties die young.」（美人は若くして死ぬ／美人薄命）、「Beauty draws more than oxen.」（美貌は牛よりも引く）があります。

  （「４　words」の諺）９　Barking dogs seldom bite.日本語訳吠える犬は滅多に噛まない。日本の諺としては、「食いつく犬は吠えつかぬ」と、標記の諺の逆説的なものがあります。要は、「吠える犬」より「吠えない犬」の方が危険であるということです。ほぼ同じ意味の諺として、「Great barkers are no biters.」（偉大な吠え手は噛み手ではない）、比喩としては、大きな声で自己主張する人間に限って、いざという時に実行力がないという意味で使われます。「seldom」を含む別の諺として、「Misfortunes seldom come alone.」（不幸はほとんど単独では来ない）、「Seldom sick sore sick.」（たまの病気ひどい病気）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）８　Bad news travels fast.日本語訳悪い知らせは速く旅する。日本の諺としては「悪事千里を走る」がほぼ同じ意味で使われています。一説によると、人が良い評判を聞いたときは２人に話し、悪い評判は７人に話すそうです。その連鎖反応の結果は、数回バトンタッチしただけで、何千倍も差がでることになります。洋の東西を問わず、庶民はスキャンダルが好きということですね。「travel」を含む諺として、「Travelers and poets have leave to lie.」（旅人と詩人は嘘をつく許可を持っている）、「Travel broadens the mind.」（旅は心を広げる）、「He travels fastest who travels alone.」（独りで旅する者が最も速く旅する）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）７　Bad news has wings.日本語訳悪いニュースは翼を持つ。日本の諺としては、「悪事千里を走る」が対応しています。根拠は定かではありませんが、人が良いニュースを２人に伝えるのに対して、悪いニュースは７人に伝えるという説があります。これが繰り返されるわけですから、悪いニュースが急速に広がることになります。同じ意味のより有名な諺として、「Bad news travels fast.」がありますが、標記の諺の方が洒落ていますね。「news」を含む諺として、「No news is good news.」（頼りのないのは良い知らせ）、「Good news goes on crutches.」（良いニュースは松葉杖で行く）などがあります。また、「wing」を含む諺として、「Riches have wings.」（富は翼を持っている／金は天下の回りもの）があります。

  （「４　words」の諺）６　Apparel makes the man.日本語訳衣類が男を作る。日本の諺としては、「馬子にも衣装」が対応しています。この「馬子」とは、馬の手綱を引いて人や荷物を搬送していた職業のことで、身分的には低い人々でした。その意味では、差別的な表現と言えます。元々、「Apparel」はラテン語由来の言葉であり、儀式などの「正装」を準備しておくことを意味していましたので、標記の諺には含蓄があるというこｔです。英語の諺としては、古くから「The tailor makes the man.」や「Clothes make the man.」が使われています。因みに、「Clothes do not make the man.」という逆の諺もあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）５　Ambition makes people diligent.日本語訳野心は人々を勤勉にする。日本の諺としては対応するものが見当たりません。要は、野望や大望を持つことにより、それを達成するために努力せざるを得ないということです。「ambition」ファミリーの形容詞「ambitious」は、明治初期、札幌農学校で教鞭をとったアメリカ人ウィリアム・スミス・クラーク博士の「Boys be ambitious.」（少年よ大志を抱け）という言葉で知られています。この一文だけを切り出すと、上品な言葉では言えないのですが、博士の講演ではこの後、社会のために役立てる「野心」であるべきだとしています。「diligent」の名詞形「diligence」を含む諺として、「Diligence is the mother of good luck.」（勤勉は幸運の母である）があります。

  （「４　words」の諺）４　All pain, no gain.日本語訳すべて痛み、得るものなし。日本の諺としては、「百害あって一利なし」あるいは、「骨折り損のくたびれ儲け」が対応しています。標記は、有名な諺「No pain, no gain.」（痛みなくして得るものなし）が元々あり、これをもじった表現と言えます。因みに、日本の諺「百害あって一利なし」の直訳ともいえる諺、「 Doing no good and a lot of harm.」（良いことは何もなく、たくさんの害をなすこと）があります。「pain」を含む諺として、「The fear is worse than the pain.」（恐怖は痛みよりも悪い／案ずるより産むがやすし）、「Pride feels no pain.」（プライドは痛みを感じない／武士は食わねど高楊枝）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）３　All geese are swans.日本語訳すべてのガチョウは白鳥である。日本の慣用句としては、「手前みそ」が近いようです。その昔、自家製の味噌を作る文化があり、やはり、自分で苦労して造った味噌を自慢したことに由来しています。標記の諺は、自分のガチョウは、白鳥のように美しく思えるという意味になります。因みに、「geese」は「goose」の複数形です。変化形として、「All his geese are swans.」があります。「All」で始まる諺として、「All cats are grey in the dark.」（暗闇の中ではすべての猫が灰色である）、「All good things must come to an end.」（すべての良いことには終わりが来る）、「All is fair in love and war.」（恋と戦争ではすべてが正当である）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）２　After pleasure comes pain.日本語訳楽しみの後に痛みが来る。日本の諺としては、「楽あれば苦あり」に対応しています。また、古くは、「禍福はあざなえる縄のごとし」と言われるように、福ばかりが続くことはなく、逆に禍ばかりが続くわけでもないということです。同じ意味で、より端的な諺として「No pleasure without pain.」（苦痛のない楽しみはない）があります。要は、「楽あれば苦あり」を覚悟して生きろということです。「After」で始まる諺として、「After rain comes fair weather.」（雨の後は晴れる）、「After the feast comes　the reckoning.」（ご馳走の後は勘定書きが来る）、「After a calm comes a storm.」（凪の後に嵐が来る）などがあります。

  （「４　words」の諺）１　After me the deluge.日本語訳私の後、大洪水。日本の諺としては、「後は野となれ山となれ」が対応しています。「deluge」はラテン語由来の「大水・, 大洪水」という意味で、「the Deluge」は「ノア(Noah)の洪水」になります。変化形として、「After us the deluge.」や「After us, the flood.」があります。また、同じ意味になる、「The future will take care of itself.」（未来は自身で面倒をみるだろう）があります。「After」で始まる諺として、「After a storm comes a calm.」（嵐の後に凪が来る／雨降って地固まる）、「After dinner rest a while, after supper walk a mile.」（豪華な晩餐の後は暫く休み、普通の夕食の後は１マイル歩け）などがあります。

  （「３　words」の諺）104　Years bring wisdom.日本語訳年月は知恵を持ってくる。日本の諺としては、「亀の甲より年の功」が対応しています。意味に近い諺として、「Experience is the best teacher.」（経験は最高の教師である）、「Age and experience teach wisdom.」（年齢と経験は知恵を教える）があります。基本原則としては、年齢を重ねることと経験を積むことは比例していますが、経験が同じことの単なる繰り返しという場合もありますので、注意が必要です。「year」を含む諺として、「Years know more than books.」（年月は本より知っている）、「The first hundred years are the hardest.」（最初の100年が最もきつい）、「One year's seeding makes seven years' weeding.」（１年種をつけさせると７年の雑草取りになる）があります。

  （「３　words」の諺）103　Wonders never cease!日本語訳驚きは決して止まらない。日本の諺としては、茶化している感もありますが、「驚き桃の木山椒の木」に通じるものがあります。標記の諺は文字通りに解釈すれば、「非常に驚いている」という意味になります。しかし、状況や言い方によっては茶化しているような印象も与えてしまいます。変化形として、「Wonders will never cease.」がありますが、標記とはニュアンスが違ってきます。「wonder」を含む諺として、「Wonders last but nine days.」（驚きは９日間しか続かない／人の噂も75日）、「Time works wonders.」（時は軌跡を起こす）があります。

  （「３　words」の諺）102　Wedlock is padlock.日本語訳結婚は監禁である。日本の諺としては、誤解されて定着してしまった、「結婚は人生の墓場」が対応しています。結婚は人生において極めて大きなイベントであり、そのことによる影響ははかり知れません。標記中の「wedlock」は「結婚」を意味する古い言葉です。また、「padlock」は「南京錠」という意味です。標記の仲間として、「Better be single than ill married.」（不幸な結婚より、独身が良い）という諺があります。因みに、冒頭で触れた誤解を生んだ元の諺は「Marriage is the tomb of love.」であり、意味することは「結婚は恋が心安らげる墓のようなものである」というものです。

  （「３　words」の諺）101　Wear two hats.日本語訳二つの帽子をかぶれ。これは諺と言うより、「一人二役をする」という熟語表現と言えます。日本の表現としては「二足の草鞋を履く」ということでしょうか。ただし、日本の「二足の草鞋を履く」は、例えば江戸時代、博打打とおかっぴきという、好ましくない二役を意味しますが、英語表現は必ずしもそうではありません。例えば、大学教授と企業家の組み合わせで、「She wears two hats.」と表現することができます。「wear」を含む諺として、「If the cap fits, wear it.」（もしその帽子がフィットするなら、それをかぶりなさい）、「582 Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.」（王冠をいだく頭は安らげない）があります。

  （「３　words」の諺）100　Waste makes want.日本語訳無駄が不足を作る。日本の諺としては対応するものが見当たりませんが、大変わかりやすい論理と言えます。出典は14世紀のイギリスの詩人ジェフリー・チョーサー（Geoffrey Chaucer）の「カンタベリー物語」の一節と言われています。因みにこの前段として、「Haste makes waste.」（急ぎが無駄を作る）があり、後段には「夫婦げんかになる」と続きます。また、同じ意味の諺として、「Waste not, want not.」（無駄無し、不足無し）があります。「want」を含む諺として、「The more you get, the more you want.」（得るほど、あなたは欲しくなる）、「He is rich that has few wants.」（少ない欲を持つ彼が金持ちである）などがあります。
