It's already the latter half of August, and the climate has become partly better and mild, hasn't it?
8月も後半になりましたが、暑さが幾分和らいで過ごしやすくなってきましたね。
今週中級と初級コースのレッスンを終えて、後半の休暇でしばし実家（広島）へ帰省してまいります。
さて先日、英語の接続詞などについて生徒さんより
「会話の中でいつもandを使ってしまう」
「違う意見を出す時に、butしか頭に思い浮かばなく」
というお声がありました。
よく使われる接続詞(conjunction)や副詞(adverb)には、このようなものがあります：
そして ⇨ and / then
e.g.(=for example)
I'll have lobster salad first, and then roast beef.
まずエビサラダを食べ、それからローストビーフにしよう
What happened then?
それからどうなりましたか
We spent three days in Paris then went south.
私たちはパリで三日間を過ごしてから南へ行った
でも、しかし、けれど ⇨ but / however / though / although ＊althoughは thoughより硬い語
e.g.
He didn't want to go; however, he went.
彼は行きたくなかったのに行った
Air travel is fast; sea travel is, however, restful.
空の旅に比べて船旅は時間はかかるがくつろげる
Though he was only twelve he could run faster than any kid in the school.
彼はまだ12才だったが、学校で一番速く走れた
Though your plan is very good, we cannot afford to carry it out right now.
あなたの計画は非常にいいですが、私たちは今それを実行する余裕がありません
Although she joined the company only a year ago, she's already been promoted twice.
一年前に会社に入ったばかりだが、彼女はすでに2回昇進した
〜にもかかわらず ⇨ in spite of / despite ＊despiteは in spite ofより硬い語
e.g.
In spite of the rain the open-air concert was carried on.
雨天にもかかわらず野外コンサートは続行された
In spite of his unexpectedly slow recovery from his sickness he nevertheless resumed his research.
病後の回復がおもわしくないにもかかわらず彼は研究を再開した
Despite the fog we went for a walk.
霧にもかかわらず我々は散歩に出かけた
Despite all our efforts to save the school, the County decided to close it.
学校存続への私たちの努力もむなしく、郡当局は閉校を決めた
さらに、付け加えると ⇨ besides / further / moreover / in addition to
e.g.
He drank some beer besides a bottle of whisky.
彼はウイスキーを一本あけたうえに、ビールを少し飲んだ

The rent is reasonable and, moreover, the location is perfect.
家賃はまずまずで、その上、場所は完璧だ

このような、接続詞や副詞・前置詞(preposition)にバリエーションが出ると
◉会話に抑揚、メリハリが付いてくる
◉話が盛り上がる傾向にある
というメリットがあげられます。
