Two weeks ago I had a reunion with my university friends, in Tokyo.
One of them has been living in France and came back a while to Japan,
so we gathered after some years.
二週間ほど前に、大学時代の仲間と都内で小さな同窓会をしました。
フランスに在住している一人が一時帰国したので、数年ぶりに集まろうということになり。

Thinking back in the middle 1990s, there were not many Japanese students going abroad to the UK (not as much as America or Australia), then every person from the same country was something that I felt supportive.
Especially under the greyish sky, through long autumn & winter days...
思い起こせば私が行っていた1990年代半ば、イギリスへ留学する日本人は（アメリカやオーストラリアに比べると）少なかった時分でした。
なので、あちらで出会った同胞は、秋冬が長く灰色がかった空の下ではとても心強く感じたものです。
I used to live in the university accommodation like many other students on campus, and because most of the time English was a spoken language,
I felt a little relieved when talking in my mother tongue as well as occasionally having "sushi lunchbox" sold at college shop.
キャンパスの多くの学生のように、学生寮で暮らしていたため（＊イギリスでは寮が通常）日常のほとんどが英語という中で、日本語で会話できる時間はどこか開放感がありました。
それに、大学の購買に置いてあった（！）寿司ランチをたまに食べた時も・・・
Though each member keeps her own path now, it is really nice to have someone who knew myself of the late teens and I am thankful for that.
今はそれぞれの道を歩いてる彼女たちだけれど、多感な十代の終わりからの自分を
知ってくれている友人は貴重で感謝しています。
