先日、関東地方の梅雨入り宣言が出ましたね。
湘南辻堂の英語スクール English Ivy School, teacher Rieです。
週末からのレッスンが少し落ち着いたので、今日は“副詞”について書いてみたいと思います。
先週生徒さまより「副詞は文章のどこに入れたら良いですか？」という質問があったので、副詞を入れる場所とどんな意味合いになるかを。
日本語と同様に、英語にも副詞(adverb)は数えきれないほどありますが、例えば
「gradually 徐々に/次第に」という副詞を使った場合：
1. Gradually, sun went down behind the mountains.
しだいに、太陽は山の向こうに落ちていった。
2. Sun gradually went down behind the mountains.
太陽はしだいに山の向こうに落ちていった。
3. Sun went down gradually behind the mountains.
太陽はしだいに山の向こうに落ちていった。
4. Sun went down behind the mountains gradually.
太陽は山の向こうにしだいに落ちていった。
5. Sun went down behind the mountains, gradually.
太陽は山の向こうに落ちていった、しだいに。
このような感じで gradually を置くことができ、went down / behind the mountains ＝ 「落ちていった」「山の向こうに」の一区切り文章なので
✕ went gradually down
✕ behind gradually the mountains
の様には入れられません。
これら1～5では「gradually」と「しだいに」の場所がほぼ比例してますが、どこに
どのように置いたらしっくりくるか、何度も使ってみる内にニュアンスの違いが分かってきます。
他に：
・Lisa came home quickly to see her new dog.
リサは新しい犬を見るのに急いで/素早く（家へ）帰ってきた。
・Every room was neatly furnished, as it had been advertised in the newspaper.
新聞の広告に載っていたとおり、一つ一つの部屋は小ぎれいに家具が備え付けてあった。
・Average life expectancy in Japan has risen dramatically over the last hundred years.
日本の平均寿命はこの100年間で劇的に延びた。
・I couldn't fully agree with what she was saying.
彼女の言っていたことに完全には賛成できなかったわ。
会話やテキストの中、また生徒さんには書くこと writingも通して、adverbsの使い方を掴んでいってもらいたいですね。
