At the Moomin's

Trying to get away from the city I made my way to a remote location in Saitama. After about an hour drive from Tokyo I reached the Moomin Valley Park. Quieter than Disneyland and richer in nature than most theme parks it was a perfect spot for a day out. There was plenty of good food and souvenirs to choose from and the attractions did not disappoint. If you are not familiar with the quirky Moomin stories from faraway Finland, this is your chance to engage with the world and its characters. Admittedly, there’s more in the Park to excite little ones than adults, but there’s still enough fun to have for everyone, including boating and zip-lines. Even if you just enjoy walking in fresh air or having a tasty meal with a nice lake-view with a hint of Scandinavian fantasy, the Park will make your day!

Spring is well on the way

I much prefer the cooler temperatures of winter, but there's no use denying it any longer.

The first buds and blossoms were coming out a few days ago. I've no idea what kind of blossom these are but I'm fairly certain that they're not the usual cherry blossoms most people are waiting for. Still beautiful though. 

And today they looked like this. Couldn't get the blue sky and sun today unfortunately.

 

I'm looking forward to the regular cherry blossom whenever they get around to coming out but I'm not looking forward to brushing the fallen petals off from the car.  Not to mention the hay fever! This is epecially bothersome for many this time of year...

Oh, well, ... Roll on autumn!

Ready, steady, go!

Taking advantage of the warm weather I slipped on my sports shoes and went for a wholesome run. The nature has clearly woken up in expectations of spring and it was a perfect opportunity to look out for rare specimen of floral glory with fruit and flowers popping out everywhere. If you are affected by the pollen-saturated air we tend to have at this time of year, I can definitely sympathize with you as I've been there before. If, however, you’re not susceptible to any such perils, there’s now a good excuse to pull out your cameras and smartphones and take part in the spring awakening!

On March the 3rd: 

In 1857 France and the United Kingdom declared war on China which later became known as the Second Opium War.

In 1921 two doctors, Frederick Banting and Charles Best, discovered insulin; a hormone which controls the levels of sugar in the blood.

In 1939 Mahatma Gandhi begins a fast to protest against autocratic rule in India.

In 1991 Los Angeles police officers are recorded beating Rodney King. This event later led to the Los Angeles Riots in 1992 in which 63 people died and many more were injured.

It's interesting going back through history to find out what happened on a particular day, but it also helps give you a bigger perpective of things.
